NASCAR
NASCAR is far from perfect, but it could be much worse. The 2011 season is not being threatened by work stoppages or lock-outs, as millionaire athletes battle billionaire team owners for a larger share of an already obscenely large pie.

Our athletes are not being subpoenaed to testify before a congressional subcommittee about their abuse of performance enhancing drugs. No one's been pulled over with a bale of marijuana in the trunk of their car, and nobody's going to jail for shooting themselves with their own unregistered handgun in a seedy strip club on the outskirts of town.

Dave Moody,

Yup. No convicted felons, two-time losers, woman abusers, wife-beaters, bling, dog fighters, or steroid users, just guys who like to go fast.

1. Puh-lease....
NASCARs entire history is based on moonshiners. They were nothing but lawbreakers in their early days. Not that I am against alcohol, just pointing out they were into illegal activities.

2. NASCAR has not seen a moonshiner competing since Junior Johnson retired in the 1960s.
Stating "entire history" is not factually correct. BTW, Junior campaigned for Obama in North Carolina and is a loyal Democrat.

7. Moonshine should never have been made illegal in the first place!
if not for prohibition a great many ills would never have come to fruition.

the mob being the major ill of this country.
because of prohibition they gained millions and power and prestige, where before they were little more than the scum they are.

If not for the existing moonshine laws (as pointed out, ironically in a episode of dukes of hazard) we would have had ethanol many many years sooner, and probably more refined.

Sorry, I have nothing against NASCAR, and im a W/C snob. but there's nothing wrong with the poor mans le mans / formula 1 driving to be honest.

it's entertaining, redneck, and honest fun.
having moved to the mid west, i have a much different and real appreciation for these things now.

we coastal liberals need to take the sticks out of our asses and just relax.

Not everything redneck is bad... in fact most things redneck are just fine in context.

How many remote breakage championships you have?

The temperatures in the driver's cockpit of a NASCAR race car can reach around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine this temperature with a 500-lap race at 200 mph along with lack of air flow and you will see that NASCAR driver physical conditioning to build in endurance is critical. Plus, a NASCAR driver will need to steer and maneuver a 3,400 pound vehicle around curves, other cars, and over bumps. This can cause a lot of impacting against the driver plus just the strain of controlling the steering wheel. Then there are the G-forces that will result from banking turns at speeds close to 200 mph causing pressure on the driver's torso as it presses against the side of the vehicle.

Oxygen is a problem too. Since the cars are very aerodynamic so as to increase speed, the air is guided around the car but does not reach the inside. The driver's cockpit is not pressurized like an aircraft. So, the driver has to be able to process what oxygen he gets very efficiently. Therefore, NASCAR driver physical conditioning will include aerobic exercises so as to optimize the processing of oxygen by the body.

24. "They?"
Any driver who fits that description would be a very old man by now. Unless, of course, you're referring to the younger ones. I was unaware that Jeff Gordon ran a still in the Ozarks...who knew.

11. Let's see you drive a 3400 LB car at 200 MPH for three hours in traffic inches away
without soiling yourself. The average weight of a NASCAR driver is SOUTH of 200 lbs, and they survive hits that would kill you in your daily piece of crap.

But you are an expert at stoplight sonatas.........

9. NASCAR has been called a benevolent dictatorship.
I call them the Daytona Sopranos. They run a tight ship because they can. If a driver balks at their rules they are told to find a different series in which to race if they don't like to abide by them.

I enjoy watching NASCAR races. The truck series races are my favorite. I know NASCAR is not everybody's cup of tea but I don't ever criticize those who enjoy basketball and hockey.

20. No dinero these days
but if I had my 'druthers, I'd go to Fontana -- not as far and cheaper hotels. In better days we used to go to Laguna Seca. Not NASCAR but the motorcycle races and Formula 1 stuff is pretty cool as it's so up-close-and-personal. Besides, I'm a big fan of local Super Modified and Midget races. I love the down home stuff.

check out the pit crews; those guys train like football players. Change four tires, add 20 gallon of gas, clean the windows, etc in 15 seconds after carrying all the stuff over a three foot wall. And unlike any other sport; you screw up and people can die.

California Speedway is awesome...they've even made it a Metro-Link stop so I can get there on the train.

31. googled NASCAR driver arrest... seems you lied to me
May 2010
Former NASCAR driver Jimmy Neal got out of jail early this morning -- and now he's headed right back ... after he was arrested hours later for attempted rape.

Feb 2011
Michael Annett, who drives for Rusty Wallace Racing, was arrested in Mooresville, N.C., early Sunday and charged with driving while under the influence, failure to reduce speed, texting while driving and resisting a public officer, according to a report.

Feb 2010
36-year-old Henri Zogaib is accused of operating a Ponzi scheme.
Investigators say Zogaib, who races in NASCAR's Grand-Am series, stole about $5.1 million from 19 different people across the country who invested into a company he owned.

March 2009
Carl Dean Combs, who raced in the early 1980s. He was just busted when state agents in North Carolina found a still near the old North Wilkesboro Speedway.

January 2011
Tony Stewart arrested? Yes, the mild-mannered(?) Indiana NASCAR driver was arrested while competing in Australia over the weekend. It appears that Stewart and the track owner disagreed about track conditions whereupon Stewart smashed him in the face with his helmet. The track owner returned the favor by giving Stewart a black eye. The two-time NASCAR champion has left ‘the land down under’ but may have to return to answer additional questions and appear in court. Does that answer your questions about Tony ‘calming down’?

You could go on and on but I think the point is NASCAR drivers are just like every other people. Some do bad things. Nice try though.
