MO House approves bill that would restrict union dues for political purposes
Posted on May 10, 2011 by Roseann Moring
JEFFERSON CITY — The House approved a bill today that would require unions to get authorization before spending dues on political purposes.

Rep. Shane Schoeller, R-Willard, sponsored the House version of the bill. In his closing speech, he said he was thinking of his constituents.

“This assures that they make their voices heard,” he said.

Opponents say this is part of a larger anti-union push. But House Republican leadership cut off debate before opponents could speak on the bill.

2. Worst piece of legislation I think I've ever seen
The Senate version bans payroll deduction for union dues. This one just requires political donations to be renewed every year - which is bad enough. It will strangle unions and their political power.

5. Does the GOP have the votes to override a Nixon veto?
I vaguely recall some anti-union legislation getting stalled a few weeks back because even in some GOP districts union membership is too important a part of the electorate to alienate. Hopefully I'm remembering this correctly and not being overly optimistic about this.

6. Yes they can override
I think the other legislation you're thinking of was right to work? I believe it's dead.

This bill is really bad though. I think it's worse than RTW.

7. Yep - that's what I was thinking of
I guess I'm being hopeful that if the RTW couldn't get off the ground, this wouldn't get the 2/3rds required for the veto override.
