Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is running for president in 2012, ending months of speculation.

The Associated Press reported Monday morning that the Georgia Republican will make the announcement Wednesday over Twitter and Facebook.

Gingrich appeared to confirm it in a tweet saying, "Be sure to watch Hannity this Wednesday at 9pm ET/8pm CT. I will be on to talk about my run for President of the United States."

Several other hopefuls for the Republican nomination have announced their exploratory committees, including former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX).

4. His network has amassed more than 1.7 million voter and donor contacts
His network has amassed more than 1.7 million voter and donor contacts and raised $32 million between 2009 and 2010—more than all his potential 2012 rivals combined.

Again, Newt's fundraising prowess doesn't appear to have any root in tangible grassroots enthusiasm (the Journal notes that he's a "solid fourth" choice in most polls). But there he is, fanning the flames for his pet causes in organizations American Solutions and Gingrich Productions that may make Mitt Romney blush in comparison. American Solutions, in particular, brought in over $28 million in donations last election cycle, below only the Democratic and Republican governor's associations. As far as "stale" candidates go, his operation looks stronger than whatever Sarah Palin has been planning.

Newt Gingrich explained his past infidelities by saying they were brought on" by how passionately I felt about this country" -- a passion that caused the former Speaker of the House to work "far too hard," thus driving him into the arms of women he wasn't married to.

On 'The Colbert Report' (weekdays, 11:30 PM ET on Comedy Central), Stephen Colbert took a whack at that softball.

"Newt only cheated on his wives because he's so passionate about America," Colbert explained. "Patriotism takes many forms, some people join the army, some people wear a flag pin, and some people cheat on their wife while she's in the hospital with cancer."

5. Let me start the rumor that...

...he's announcing over Twitter and Facebook instead of television so that he can do this while having improper sexual contact with the Next Mrs. Gingrich (would that be #3 or #4? I've lost track).

Unless he's flip-flopped from his long-established practice, that is.

He just wants to run for what he can get out of it. If he was Prez
he would have to actually work, and that's the last thing he wants.

14. These things are coordinated. His job will be to be a RW nut that will help
another RW nut look more moderate and reasonable. He will drop out at some point and endorse the other nut.
