Bin Laden gave up on jihad.
It turns out Bin Laden developed a fatal flaw. He decided to become a family man. He got holed up with his family and left the battlefield. He was still "in charge" but gave up jihad in a real way. A guy that wants to engage in battle isn't going to be laid up at home. He got so lazy that he didn't leave the house for 5 years. This eventually killed him.

2. Speaking as someone that has not left my house in months.
And even then only a few times in years.

I find that an interesting concept, the due of beer and travel money that would allow that within acceptable peramiters of interactions in society, has not arrived.

So my war of repeating that I am due beer and travel money will intensify and continue.

Since I am due beer and travel money and many experiences and someone needs to send that.

Although I also have not found acceptable methods to correct that issue, and have never chosen to think or use ideas of violence or theft of free will as the symbol of many people choose to do.

Although that does not change that I am due beer and travel money, and many experiences.

Side note, I also don't think any posts here are relevant, nor increase nor decrease the timing of the arrival of beer and travel money that will occur, becuase it is a just due to me, not about any posts I make.

8. Why?
I am due beer and travel money.

And all permutations that include going anywhere, when that debt is due make no sense, or no more sense then not going anywhere.

You saying I should get out more, is a basic misunderstanding of existence.

How can you say I should get out more, when I am due beer and travel money and that has not been sent? What would be the purpose of getting out?

Anything I could do while out, or here for that matter, has no value or reason, when I should be doing what I should do with beer and travel money that is due. So anything I do is the same, so might as well post irrelevantly while awaiting the just payment of beer and travel money that is due.

there is no reason to go out, although the correlation in the other comment is interesting.

3. From what's reported in the news, he absolutely did NOT give up as leader
He was the operational head of AQ, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Aung San Suu Kyi also hasn't left her house for decades. Do you think she's "lazy" and isn't willing to "engage in battle"?

Some fights really are ideological. And having/being propaganda masters means they are as fully engaged in "battle" as those with weapons on the field imho.

7. I didn't say he gave up as leader.
But he did leave the battlefield. He hid in another country with his family. That's really not the action of a warrior. You are right that he was still engaged, but hiding with his family for so long says that his priorities changed.

11. I see no evidence his priorities changed.
He didn't engage in the work of the house that the other men engaged in, freeing him up to spend all his time on his jihad activities. You don't have to be physically on a battlefield to be a leading general.

12. He was never ON the battlefield. Other than during the Soviet occupation
when the mujahadeen were resisting, and Bin Laden shows up with all his dad's construction money and he and his Saudi buddies tried to play Wannabe Warrior for a while (and were completely feckless and the laughing stock of the Afghanis), when did OBL get down and dirty?

He has always led from the periphery, and sent others to carry out his bankrolled plans.

He may have fought in Tora Bora, but only because he had to to save his skin. But mostly what he did is run.

It would have been the same thing if Hitler hid in Switzerland while the war raged on.

so his seclusion was quite rational.

14. We don't know the extent to which he was planning ops from his hom
The CIA and the US government have yet to release details of the "treasure trove" of information they got from his home. My guess is that its a bunch of nothing and an exaggeration. Al-Qaeda has splintered so much since Bin Laden was chased out of Afghanistan.

For all we know, the guy could have very well been retired from the terrorism business. Be careful of CIA and Pentagon exaggeration trying to keep the flags waving, the patriotism high and the war on terror going.

they retrieved. Sorry, but I trust Obama's word on this and I believe he IS in the position to know.

19. You're probably right that we might never know the details of the information seized
Edited on Mon May-09-11 01:48 AM by Cali_Democrat
The CIA is currently analyzing information and even some computer files apparently weren't even encrypted by Bin Laden so they should be easy to get to. We will have to trust the CIA's word about their contents.

Specific details may be released if they're confident the information will not compromise anti-terror activities. This has been done in the past so it is possible.

Again, as you said, it's possible that we'll never come to know the specific details of Bin Laden's recent involvement in terrorism because the information may never be released by the CIA or the other agencies.

or flying planes into buildings..

They relied on their charisma & "charm" to recruit young zealots to actually DO the dirty work..

OBL was just aging, and being the most wanted man on earth, he hid out like the shifty coward that he was..holed up with women & kids, watching tv.. he may have thought the quantity of females & kids would be a shield for him, against attempts to capture him.. and of course the Pakistanis looked the other way too..

He was very much like any man who used to be "all that", and who lost it in later life, but who desperately clung to what used to be.. Like Norma Desmond, he was always ready for his close up...and he finally got it..
