Osama bin Laden code name was Geronimo.
It was not the name of the mission mission.

2. If someone says the use of the name "Geronimo" offends them -- no matter what it's used for -- it
seems to me that listening to the concern isn't that hard to do.

6. When I was a kid, back in the 50s, the signal during the dirt clod
wars to charge was always "Geronimo!" I'm not sure where that originated, but I'm thinking WWII somewhere. It was universal, and used by everyone. I don't think we even knew who Geronimo was at the time. That was what you said when you were about to charge the other team.

21. Memories, indeed...
The Geronimo regimental crest was still the insignia of the 1/501 and 2/501 Infantry (the "Geronimos") of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. The crest can be seen on the wall in this 1969 photo taken at the HQ of Bravo Company, 2/501 Infantry, at its rear basecamp, LZ Sally, at Phu Bai:

A better graphic of the crest:

Besides the regimental Geronimo crest, the old unit patch in WWII depicted Geronimo with a thunderbolt:

I don't know who chose that code word but it was a poor choice. Of course the military likes to use code words that are easily understandable over sometimes weak radio communications but...it was still a poor choice.

11. The only link would be to "Geronimo EKIA"
Everything else says that the *mission* was codenamed Geronimo and bin Ladin himself was "Jackpot."

But it's much more outrage-producing to misunderstand what's going on and then insist that you're right.

Some have even jumped on "Geronimo enemy killed in action" as evidence that Geronimo = Bin Ladin. I don't know how they parse the grammar for "Geronimo enemy" in that reading. It rather comes across like saying Obama president ordered the mission. Again, the first order of business is outrage and grievance.

14. the transcript from Obama's interview with 60 minutes tonight
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504803_162-20060530-10391709.html

"PRESIDENT OBAMA: There was a point before folks had left, before we had gotten everybody back on the helicopter and were flying back to base, where they said Geronimo has been killed. And Geronimo was the code name for bin Laden. And now obviously at that point these guys were operating in the dark with all kinds of stuff going on so everybody was cautious. But at that point cautiously optimistic. "

8. Perhaps we should only use the first letter of any/all words, and replace the
remainder with asterisks. No one can be offended when we say s***, p***, f***, and everyone will be as happy as a p** i* s***.

13. Well gee, one sees words with asterisks replacing letters here on
DU almost daily. Asterisks are inoffensive little creatures, and someimes are useful if one wants to type out more of the letters in the "N" word, and simply replace the two g's with **. I see that here regularly.

Have I been duped, and didn't know what the other posters were doing? Should I have been offended when my keen spidey senses told me what those missing letters were, or what the "N" word actually is?

its still the same meaning whether someone uses the letters or an asterick so I just type fuck, piss, shit or whatever as I see no difference

19. My apologies for misunderstanding what you typed. I believe
anything that is going to be offensive to a reader will be offensive even with one or more letters concealed - so why bother.

12. People are just looking for a reason to be pissed off about something.
My family is from a long line of Native Americans on both sides. None of my family is offended. We have more important things to worry about. I have friends who are Native American. I live in Oklahoma. How could I not? They don't care either.

and no I don't care either. Once my kids played Marco Polo with some Italian kids, no one was offended and everyone had a great time.
