Since we're talking Detroit photos, here's my brother's - now in the Detroit Public Library.
I am extremely proud of my little brother (don't tell him), and the fact that his work is now in the Burton historical collection of the Detroit Public Library.

He's an extraordinary person, and since we are commenting on Detroit here on DU now, here's a Detroiter who loves his city and has documented that affection through extraordinary photos. I commend them to you. Please take a look: http://www.detroit-photos.com/bob_bio.php

6. Thank you. Yes, he deserves his due.
He had to put up with me, his older brother. Plus, I still have hair. Of course, he is thin and athletic, and I am fat and full of bad habits. But he is extraordinarily talented artistically, and has always been a great asset to Detroit, whether the Detroit Institute of Arts, or the Library, or the Detroit Zoo, or so many other organizations to which he has given of his time and talents.

He shall probably hate me for outing him here. But I, as the older brother, will give him noogies.

2. Chicago native here, K & R
I think I visited Detroit maybe three or four times. Not enough to get a feel for it or anything, but just to say I'd been there.

And though I moved away from the midwest over a quarter of a century ago, I still have enormous respect and affection for the people and the monuments to what human beings can do.

3. So much of what defined us culturally came out of Detroit
The music. The cars. The unions.
It defined decades of who we are, and as a progressive, was the virtual panacea of what things could be.
Does anyone really wonder why Detroit is dying?
It is solely so those that enabled the demise of a city can sit back and point fingers at what these "librul ideas" can do to a city.
It is the epitome of a city that was "drowned in a bathtub" by greed and the manipulation of low information voters to vote against their interests, or a self-fulfilling prophecy, if you will.
Those pictures are works of art.

8. Thanks. I'm not sure he captured the "fall," but he captured another moment in time.
As Detroit fails, so does our nation. Of course it will never be what it once was, but we need to appreciate our history, and create opportunities. We are not doing that now.

12. congratulate him for me. Black and white is a stunning choice
to do justice to shapes and design, especially older buildings and such.

14. He's quite the master of the black and white format. Stunning. I hate to say it but there is a
certain beauty in all that decay as you brother has captured it.

17. That "certain beauty" is because he truly loves Detroit.
As do I. I'm lucky he's my brother, lucky that I was born there, and for sure we're both lucky we had a Mom who raised us alone in the 50s-60s. Thanks very much.

18. Great photos. I especially love 'Telway Hamburgers' What an image.
I love the forlorn evening sky. The empty streets. The megawatts of light surrounding the hamburger joint.

Not as their friend, or child, I speak!
But as, on some far northern strand,
Thinking of his own Gods, a Greek
In pity and mournful awe might stand
Before some fallen Runic stone--
For both were faiths, and both are gone.

- Matthew Arnold
