Rachel Maddow and Meghan McCain go to the gun show

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow visited a convention of the National Rifle Association with NRA member Meghan McCain, making good on a promise she had made to McCain earlier. The two discussed and debated gun policy, which is where McCain said she gets “really conservative.”

“My problem is when it becomes this, ‘You own a gun! You’re going to go out there and kill everyone!’,” McCain said. Later, after talking about how a gun made her feel safer as a female living alone she added, “I don’t own a semi-assault rifle, and I don’t see the need for the average citizen to own a semi-assault rifle.”

Maddow admitted to having shot a tank round, and admitted that the one thing she liked about the NRA was the “gun safety stuff that they do.”

1. That was a good segment
However I find it hard to credit McCain with much knowledge about firearms after hearing her refer to a "semi-assault rifle".

Its depressing knowing that Maddow is into such a sick hobby.

7. I guess
Guns are fucked up and unnecessary in every way, and I dont understand why someone would take pleasure in shooting a weapon that could easily kill someone. I'm not making a case about the legality of guns or whatever, I just dont understand the attraction.

8. The only things I have shot with my gun are targets and rattlesnakes
And I only shoot the snakes that have the bad judgement to come near the house or the barn. They can have the rest of the farm, I just don't want them where the people might accidentally disturb them.

I had never felt the need to own a gun, had never even held one until we bought our farm. Then one day we found a rattler in the barn and none of us had a gun to kill it. A friend with good experience in owning guns volunteered to help me buy one just for those occasions. His father had been an Olympic sharp shooter and taught his children gun handling and safety. None of that family were "gun nuts" - guns were just another tool to be used properly when necessary.

When my friend helped me select my gun, he also made me learn gun safety and gave me lessons in how to handle it, how to shoot and how to store it safely. He refused to let me have custody of my gun until he made sure I had learned those lessons. This gun has been shot less than five times in thirty years, but the few times it was used, it was to keep people safe.

Guns are not completely unnecessary and if there is a need to have one, the owners should learn safety so as to keep them as securely as possible.

18. Snakes are people, too!
Targets are the gateway to killing people.

Just stay away from my family.

27. I like snakes - just not the vipers
I protect the rat snakes around here - for one thing, with enough rat snakes, there won't be enough food for the rattlers.

Targets are safe from me now, too - I only shot enough of them to get approval from my friend. ;)

20. There are more practical and safer ways to deal with snakes than to use a gun. nt

26. Not if the snake is five feet long and faster than I am.
I'm not going after a five foot rattler with a shovel, that's for sure.

10. Hint: that's how the fundies view sexual behavior they don't approve of.
Keeping one's personal moral judgments to oneself works both ways.

16. Where do we draw the line? I like shooting arrows with my bow a lot.
Is that bad? Fencing?

19. No, thats much better.
Bow and arrows don't usually accidently go off.
People don't often commit violent crimes or robberies with them either. Unless you go back to midieval times.

22. Guns are not unnecessary.
We have several, including one that sits in a drawer in my nightstand, just in case. My mother and I would have been involved in at least one if not two home invasions if it hadn't been for me cocking a shotgun on a couple of occasions near a door that someone was trying to get into after my father died. You have no idea what you are talking about.

3.  ‘You own a gun! You’re going to go out there and kill everyone!’,” Eh?
Somebody said that? Does Meghan McCain truly believe that there are people out there who contend that every gun owner is a potential murderer?

Ridiculous hyperbole has become the staple of political discourse.

11. Ask a few of DU's resident anti-gun crusaders.
There's people in the guns forum who will tell you EXACTLY that, that any gun owner is dangerous, and that even owning a gun is a sign of mental illness and homicidal tendencies. Seriously.

12. I think they only say that to push your buttons.
And it works, because you're mentally ill and homicidal.

I'm kidding.

23. I'm only homicidal when I watch Republicans speaking on television.
And in those cases, a firearm would be far too quick and merciful.

21. Unfortunately, there are some people that do
I've heard them myself. I don't take them seriously, however, and most other people don't either.

Pick any subject, and you will find a fanatic for that subject.

she went to the "most dangerous alley in the country" with the town councilman from that district.

24. I think the Conservative fascination with guns is much more about fear than a devotion to
the Constitution. I'm a gun owner myself, and I'm sure there are plenty of other gun owners who hunt with them or just like to go shooting occasionally. But I've noticed a common factor amongst the Conservatives I've known. They're mostly very frightened people.

Seriously-- talk to them about guns and it usually won't be more than five minutes before they're talking about the chances of "looters" invading their homes. It's always looters, too-- not burglars. Looters. It's bizarre.
