MADISON: Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay) announced she will challenge State Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) in an upcoming recall election. Pasch's entry into the race means that Darling, who helped kill last session's Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA), will face a supporter of protecting medical cannabis and one of the bill's 13 State Assembly cosponsors. Previously, supporters of a campaign to recall Sen. Darling turned in petitions containing over 30,000 signatures, nearly twice the amount needed. The state General Accountability Board is currently verifying signatures.

Pasch, a nurse and former nursing educator brings a strong background in health care to the table. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Nurses Association, long a supporter of medical cannabis legislation in the state. She also served as vice chair of the Assembly Public Health committee in the 2009-2010 session. The Public Health committee was the Assembly side of the Dec. 15, 2009 8-plus hour combined hearing with the Senate Health committee Sen. Darling served on. WNA testified in support at the Dec. 15, 2009 JRMMA hearing while Darling joined Republican colleagues including then Rep. Leah Vukmir (R-Wauwatosa) in hammering the bill.

Despite her opposition to allowing patients with serious illness including multiple sclerosis to legally use medical cannabis, Darling's legislature webpage bio states she was the "2006 Wis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Advocate of the Year". Cannabis has long been recognized as beneficial in easing MS spasticity and the has been linked to slowing or halting the progression of MS.

Rep. Pasch joined 12 other Assembly members in cosponsoring the JRMMA AB554/SB368 last session including lead sponsor ...................
