Republican and Democratic legislative leaders say their differences over a new state budget are getting larger instead of narrowing.

Top Democrats said Thursday the dispute could go on for weeks or even months.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal says his members are back home, making the case about the impact spending cuts supported by Republicans will have on services. He says, “We're not going to let them gut-punch the middle class in the State of Iowa, and that's what these new budget numbers do."

House Speaker Kraig Paulsen says voters gave Republicans control of the House and the governor's office to shrink state government, and that's what they are doing. He is optimistic about a resolution, saying, "I will tell you House Republicans are not going to let (state) government shut down."....

1. And Zombie Terry's response is to slash even more from the

education budget. And insist even harder on a two-year budget instead of the one-year budget the Dems want. (Dems offered an 18-month compromise, and of course GuvTerry said no).

(We have a Republican House and Dem Senate, for those keeping score. And a recycled Governor who isn't any more humane this time around.)

another term. He was the one who drained the state's rainy day funds when he was in office before.

3. I think the Wackazoids of the West (Steve King country) backlashed

at the Supreme Court decision about same-sex marriage and Terry washed in on that wave.

I just wonder how much VanderPlaatz and the Koch boys spent on getting those three judges voted out.

Too bad we couldn't do something useful with those funds, like invest in Iowa's formerly-wonderful education system for kids.

4. I worked briefly with Vander Plaatz on a project years ago

and, although I realized he was was involved with his church, he never struck me as being way out of the mainstream. I was really shocked when he started associating himself with the Teabaggers elements.

It makes me physically ill also to see what they are doing to our education system. It was one of the best in the nation.

7. Yes. Screwing over tomorrow's citizens to make today's wealthy

even wealthier is so immoral (one could say . . . unChristian!) -- and I don't understand how these guys don't see that. Because they don't want to see it, I guess.

Terry says he wants to "attract businesses" to our state -- but offering them a bunch of semi-literate employees isn't going to help much! But long-range planning is not a Republican forte, I've noticed -- like preventing all abortions, and then refusing health care to the infants/children who are born needing expensive life-long care.

I think it was Terry who once said he wanted "highly-paid employees" to move to Iowa -- stunning how that doesn't translate in their minds into Iowa offering jobs with decent wages, isn't it!!!
