This seemingly harmless quote might actually be the most profound statement about our political system that has ever been uttered.

A lawyer never asks a witness a question in front of the jury unless that lawyer already knows the answer. This is standard. Our elected officials tend to operate in the same fashion. They are basically (if not literally) lawyers. What we see on C-SPAN is an orchestrated production. All parties involved already know what will be said before they ever step in front of the cameras.

The real arguments take place behind closed doors, out of reach from the cameras and journalists. Politicians who appear to be bitter enemies in public sit in their offices together, sipping expensive scotch and shaking hands over which special interest groups will win the battle of the day.
