TALLAHASSEE — State lawmakers Friday are poised to approve a sweeping overhaul of Medicaid, dramatically changing health coverage for 2.9 million low-income, elderly and developmentally disabled Floridians in a bid to squeeze savings out of the $22 billion program.
Senate Health and Human Services budget chief Joe Negron, R-Stuart, called the rewrite the "most significant, transformational change" to the program in state history. By next year, Negron said lawmakers expected to reduce spending by $1.1 billion.

But the plan unveiled Thursday surfaced only after Negron and his House counterpart, Rob Schenck, R-Springhill, took negotiations deep underground for weeks.
The House and Senate approved rival Medicaid rewrites weeks ago. But neither Negron, Schenck nor other House and Senate leaders provided any details of the subsequent secret talks.
