Newsflash: Fewer Americans Own TVs (and I'm one of them)

http://www.pcworld.com/article/226994/newsflash_fewer_americans_own_tvs.html

Fewer Americans own TV sets these days, research firm Nielsen has found. Nielsen says it expects a drop in the number of U.S. households with a television set for the first time in 20 years. Nielsen says that the decrease likely has to do with two factors: poverty and the rise of high-tech alternatives.

-snip-

Neilsen speculates that the transition from analog to digital television signals may have contributed to the decline, because poor families may not be able to afford the additional equipment required to receive the broadcasts. I don't buy this reasoning, personally, because because the set-top conversion boxes (and the antennas) were offered at quite a low price and even subsidized.

------------------

I cancelled because I couldn't afford cable anymore and my TV was analog.

current TV shows. The only reason we have it is to watch some sports.

ETA: We don't watch much of anything online, either. We see maybe one movie every three months. We rent little and sometimes watch an old sitcom (such as WKRP, seriously) on Hulu about once a week. TV is just not a huge staple in my house. If it weren't for live sports, we'd get rid of it -- or, at least, not replace it when it dies (it's 25 years old).

3. I have 3 tvs; no cable or satellite, but great digital reception + Netflix streaming videos.
So my tv viewing costs me about $9 a month and I have more shows and programs than I can watch.

Although all of my tvs now are hdtv ready and I get great free and over the air hdtv, when the digital switch came I bought 2 good receivers for $10 each and I can get my digital stations (more channels than I had with analog) using an inexpensive antenna.

9. I don't have TV or a computer.
I use the computer at the library.

But I do have a cell phone only because I need it for business.

11. I had a choice between the internet and cable tv.. guess what
I chose? Cable is too expensive, and I found many of todays programs boring. I do miss watching some sports, but there are places on the net you can do some of that. I don't miss TV. Most of what I would watch, I can find somewhere on the internet.

12. I own one - it just isn't hooked up to cable, an antenna, or any other outside signals.
It has a DVD player, two VCRs, and a LaserDisc player piped into it. All of those are also wired to the stereo.
