U.S. says bin Laden photo "gruesome," weighs release
Reuters via Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Obama administration wrestled on Tuesday with releasing what it called a gruesome image of Osama bin Laden's corpse, even as militants started questioning whether U.S. forces really killed him.

Different parts of the Obama administration offered differing views, with CIA Director Leon Panetta saying there was never any doubt that ultimately a photograph of the al Qaeda leader would be released to the public.

But, signaling an intense internal debate was under way, the White House insisted no decision had yet been taken and noted the graphic nature of the imagery.

"It's fair to say that it's a gruesome photograph," said White House spokesman Jay Carney, appearing to refer to an image of bin Laden taken shortly after a U.S. strike team killed him at his Pakistani compound.

1. Yes....release them.
I think that will bring us as close to the truth as we can get.

My two cents...

15. Not to disagree with our President, but I say release 'em
1) They'll come out someday anyway, just like the autopsy photos of JFK
2) Realizing it's a no-win ("hey - that half a head doesn't look like Bin Laden") not releasing them just begs the question "why won't you release them?" It becomes Orly Taitz & The Birthers, Redux.
3) We've all seen some bad photos. I grew up around photos of the Holocaust. It is what it is.
4) Frankly, this is one instance in which I don't care who we offend.
5) Closure.

2. Yes, but
take time to do it.

Let all the wackos crawl out of the woodwork with all their conspiracy theories first.

4. Also, the more dragged out, the more braced we are for the grossness.
While we wait, bring on the crazy show.

9. What we need to see are the images actually used for the facial recognition
software test they say they ran. Those plus the images used for comparison.

That way the test can be repeated using the same and other facial recognition software and comparison images.

Since DNA tests would appear to be unrepeatable (no corpse to sample), being able to repeat the facial recognition test would bolster the credibility of the claimed result.

10. Transparency.
Release to media and internet:

1. Stills of body.
2. Video and stills and written action plan vs what occurred during operation.
3. Video and ritual regarding body disposal at sea.
4. Report on DNA comparative results, interviews, etc. regarding evidence corpse was indeed OBL.
5. Statements in agreement and verified by civilian leaders of Pakistan and USA.

The confusion of the narrative is not surprising and history tells us is at least partially deliberate fog (like Chinese story link posted several times to an extreme).

I thought OBL dead already from prior news reports and his low profile over the years.

Also my perception has been OBL has been a convenient face of a complex phenomona.

I would think OBL more valuable as a captive and hope much intelligence on compuuter and paper and interviews with survivors identifies those that enablled OBL hiding in plain sight.

I am glad OBL is a dead issue. When. I am glad that POTUS Obama has politcal credit for OBL's death rather than the slacker GWB.

Apparently, we (the USA) have some serious issues with elements in Pakistan.

BTW I am in the anti-war camp, have been since the late 60's, but not a dogmatic pacifist.

12. I think they should do whatever Obama's religion teaches about
releasing that photo. But I think it is very important that they have the photos, important for historians.

13. We should never deny the truth
As ugly as it is, it's still the truth and it's best to know it.
