I think we need to honor and praise those brave, heroc Navy Seals for a job well done
especially since they cant ever be publicly acknowledged or even get a medal for their contribution to their country. Such unknown heroes!

2. I'm sure they'll get medals, albeit not publicly.
I wouldn't be surprised if they got a very quiet visit by the POTUS, actually.

In case anyone is wondering why--publicly revealing the identities of the individual soldiers involved would make them and their families targets for reprisal, including by just random nutcases. Envision the problems that the "Satanic Verses" has caused for people associated with it, besides just Rushdie.

They might be able to come out and talk about in ten or twenty years, maybe.

3. Well said...
Of course for some this will only add to the conspiracy theories... Obama won't even let us know their names! Because they don't exist and this was a hoax! OMGZ!

Yeah, I can hear it now.

I'm so very glad that people in these roles are strong, intelligent, and above the noise chamber.

5. They can be awarded medals.
There couldn't be a public ceremony or recognition. It's a guess, but their records are maintained separate from regular naval personnel for security purpose.

And yes :patriot: In the words of Admiral of the Fleet Nimitz, "Well done."

6. I must say, I am in awe of their skill level. Too bad we'll never get the full story, I bet it's a
good one.

Well deserved praise and thanks to those who can't be publicly recognized.

24. Trust Me, Multiple Screen Plays Are In The Works Right Now.

So are books, both fiction and non-fiction. Ken Burns is probably doing a documentary outline for PBS.

And the only reason that Toby Keith doesn't have a country-western song on the airwaves right now is because the man in charge of the Bin Laden operation is a black Democrat......

9. PUC for sure
A Navy Cross? Especially if one of them went Rambo.

What's a NAMS? Been awhile since I worked the paper pump.

12. I am clearly behind the curve
I don't really see what's "brave" or "heroic" about shooting an unarmed man - even a really, really bad man - point blank. But then, I don't worship at the altar of the High Church of Redemptive Violence, so I'm out of step with just about the entire country and its national religion.

What are the rules on giving out medals for an extrajudicial kill operation outside the rules of warfare? CIA medals? When is it justified? When the person's continued survival poses a threat and capture is not an option? If the President orders it, it's not illegal! Right? What about us law-abiding Americans who wanted to see him brought in alive, for tribunal, LIKE WE DID THE NAZIS AND INTERAHAMWE and believed that the gov't would follow its own law and custom, not to mention good reason for doing so since we now want to interrogate his wife and child because bin Laden ain't talking?

According to commentators on tonights news, they pull a kill operation like this in Afghanistan and Iraq twice daily (and Bob Woodward said they did targeted missions routinely in Iraq and media knew all about it but was not allowed to disclose it because it was the key to reducing the violence in Iraq, not the surge -- which is why Petraeus is slated to be CIA chief I think -- he knows all about how to efficiently use JSOC as a paramilitary branch of the spy agency, I guess) In short, the public is used to assassination and it's only a matter of time before we re-legalize it, I think.

As for me, I was told we would capture bin Laden if offered the chance. Apparently they didn't want to know what he knew or more likely, would never send or obey an order NOT to shoot on sight. After all, we've been told he's the ultimate evil, not like those Interahamwe guys who the US failed to send Seal Team 6 after.

But yeah, I appreciate they went about this fairly routine mission professionally.

22. Yes, all of that and more...hey, btw, welcome to DU
:patriot:

Just as an aside, a thought about today:

On this day, when President Obama will meet with the Navy Seals who were so brave and dedicated I am thinking of Seal Team 6 with a heart that is full of gratitude for their service to America and to Americans. I am also grateful to our Comm. in Chief who made the whole event possible. We did not forget what happened and finally Bin Laden is gone. The ceremony at Ground Zero yesterday made me proud; something lost was restored, a terrible wrong was made right in some small way and the Light pierced the heavy darkness that hovered overhead from 2001 until the leadership of President Obama with the force of the US Military and with US Intelligence ended this dark period. I am so grateful for this. Thanks and Praise be to God for His Truth and Justice. Amen.
