A funny thing happened at MOMA.
We were at MOMA San Francisco the other day, taking in an exhibit regarding the recent (post-1975 and the Judgement at Paris) history of wine.

I was standing next to a mid-20s couple who seemed to be totally with it. We were watching a back-lit Mercator projection of the global map while a time-line of recent wine events unfolded.

When the time-line reached 2002, the entry was about the US boycott of French wines during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

The couple was astounded and asked me if that was really true. They really couldn't believe the citizens of the US could act so foolishly.

I recounted my tale of when (during that time) I met two librarians from The French Library at Harvard who told me that the library was being vandalized every night during that time.

We were in Boston (Back Bay), sitting at the bar at the Colonnade Hotel. The bar was part of Brassiere Jo, a wonderful French restaurant.

There were protesters in the street outside.

But I thought it quite telling that these young adults were completely unaware of what was going on back then.

1. Those were the days of "freedom fries" and bushies yammering about "old europe."
My all time favorite line of the time was Bush saying that the French, being socialists, didn't even have a word for "entrepreneur."

Remember in the 2004 campaign when John Kerry was accused of being "too French"?

2. We were talking about the "entrepreneur" thing last night.
I had forgotten about the Kerry thing.

3. They will find out soon enough that
idiotic blind jingoism is lurking under a very thin veneer in this country. And often there's no veneer at all.

Farmers' Market kicks off tonight. BIG party.

Come on out.
