1. Once again we have Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to thank
And let's not forget George W. Bush traveling to Saudia Arabia to kiss his royal cousins while they did business with his daddy and the Carlyle Group.

Just as with Saddam Hussein, our "leaders" create the monsters they later claim we must use military force to vanquish in order to cover their own tracks so they can re-write history.

4. Actually, Jimmy Carter started funding the mujihadeen--before the Soviets
even invaded.

11. Carter began secret funding to trick the Soviets into their own Vietnam
http://www.counterpunch.org/brzezinski.html

And now here we are in Afghanistan, after Vietnam, after the Soviets, in our own quagmire.

Carter secretly funded the Mujihadeen to trick the Soviets into an un-winnable military confrontation. Reagan and Bush welcomed the Mujihadeen to the White House and declared them freedom fighting heroes akin to our "founding fathers". Reagan and Bush openly armed and aided Saddam Hussein. Now we are entrapped on two fronts in wars and occupations we cannot or will not end. Wars that have decimated our economy and divided our nation. Reagan and Bush and Bush II trapped the U.S. the way Carter trapped the Soviets. And all for their own financial benefit. I don't remember seeing Jimmy Carter's name at the Carlyle Group. There is a difference between creating foreign policy for the benefit of the nation and creating foreign policy for personal gain. Who crossed that line? Carter or Reagan/Bush/Bush?

3. Few seem to recall this -
Salem bin Laden tells one of his employees, George Harrington, that his brother Osama, is, according to a later account by Harrington, “the liaison between the US, the Saudi government, and the Afghan rebels.” Salem, head of the bin Laden family, also says that he must visit Osama in Peshawar, a base inside Pakistan for the anti-Soviet mujaheddin, to check on what equipment the Saudi government is funneling to him. The two men fly up together with another employee, Bengt Johansson, and meet Osama that day. Osama also gives his brother and the two employees a tour of some facilities in Peshawar, including refugee camps, a hospital and an orphanage, and Salem films them to publicize his brother’s charitable work.

From Steve Coll's book, The Bin Ladens.
