(Posted in response to another thread, but figured it should have a spot of its own.)

While what happened Sunday may have been a necessary evil (I am somewhat doubtful that Bin Laden would have allowed himself to be taken alive) and I believe the President made the gutsy move, I didn't feel the need to cheer it.

Now, had the death of Bin Laden meant that even one of the 3,000 people who died on September 11th would come back to life, then yes, I would have been out there cheering. But such is not so....

Now, am I angry that other people did cheer and celebrate? No. It's just a matter of personal preference, and I can't fathom myself literally cheering anyone's death, even someone as horrible as Bin Laden.

2. Why a new post to say that you're pissed off a few college kids chanted USA?
Edited on Tue May-03-11 11:07 AM by cottonseed
These are a few thousand young kids who knew no world without OBL. I think they can do whatever the hell they want. It's a big country, and by looking at DU there were still a lot of people reacting to OBL's death "correctly" (without a smile on their faces). I think you have a beef with how our cable networks covered the revelry, not with the kids themselves. Now, if you think that not one person should react to this news with a smile, a beer, and chants of USA, then you're just an old grump.

5. I'm not pissed, I just can't bring myself to feel the same way.
It's all subjective.

Some see a bad man dead and find it reason to cheer.

Others, such as myself, see a bad man dead and just see it like that--another man dead, on top of the thousands already dead.

If people want to cheer, power to them. Just excuse me for not joining in.

16. Frankly, there have been some people who've insinuated I was morally inferior....
...for not reacting more jubilant to the news.

17. No one person's reaction to news of this is any better than the other...

Even those that gathered in crowds... even those that contemplated on their own.

So, I think we're good here. Fine post.

6. People that cheer at sporting events are bloodthirsty savages.
Just my opinion, mind you.

10. You're being sarcastic, of course.
I shouted loudly and prolongedly at the following scene. What does that make me?

8. I posted right behind you in that previous thread.. so I will just leave my
thoughts on the matter here.. My subjective feelings on the matter

.. Those College Students have the right to yell and scream..

and with childish glee if they want.

If they want to wave the flags and shout USA USA.. they can with my blessing.

It was not them who ordered the murders of multiple thousands.. an started us down a 10 year involvement overseas.

But it was people their ages that have paid the highest price since.

I mean it is taking everything I can do to just not go out and run up and down the streets waving a flag, any flag.. just let them be

15. Me, too.
If people don't want to cheer the demise of someone who took so many American lives, that's okay. It's not that I don't value human life, it's that I do! Civilization comes with accountability. Without it, civilization does not exist.

13. I had the same reaction
My mother called to tell me bin Laden had been killed. I just felt like blah. I was neutral. I heard we, the U.S., killed him, but none of the details were really available.

I watched television programs yesterday to see how the rest of the world reacted. I read Jesse Jackson's HuffPo piece, Revenge is Redemption, first. I was disgusted and commented on it. Then when I noticed the media was using the word 'celebration', I became puzzled. I still feel that way.

I celebrate birthdays and mourn deaths. Even with tin foil dictators, I find that I mourn their lost potential. I did not feel good when Bush killed the Saddam Hussein family even with their history of murders. It just feels all bad at the end.

I don't yearn for my metaphoric or actual enemies' deaths. I accept death as a part of life, but I don't feel better knowing that people I don't like will eventually die.

Based on some of the comments here, it looks like this sentiment has not been embraced by all. I feel sad so many people died as a result of the 911 airplanes crashing into buildings. I still get upset when people forget that the Pentagon was hit as well and many families in Virginia, Dc, and Maryland felt a sharp loss too. New York City was not the sole symbol of America's commerce that was damaged.
