Who died and left me behind?
Edited on Tue May-03-11 01:22 AM by rocktivity
The night of November 9, 1965, one of my aunts arrived home from work at 5PM so exhausted from a double shift she went straight to bed. When she got up the next morning, everyone was talking about some kind of big blackout, and all she could reply was, "Huh?"

The afternoon of August 14, 2003, I drove home early from work, mostly by highway, and was annoyed that the stoplight one block from my home didn't seem to work. When realized that I had no electricity, I went to tell my landlord, who informed me that no one on the eastern seaboard had electricity.

I would feel badly that I missed Bin Laden's death, but I'm too busy copping out by pretending that it's a family curse.

When I say that I missed it, I don't mean that I didn't know about it -- and, ironically, I have DU to thank for that. I've been so busy with a project for the last few days that it wasn't until late Sunday night that I had a chance to kick back, log in, and watch the videos of Seth Meyers and Obama at the correspondents' dinner. As I was getting ready for bed, I did see DU posts announcing that an announcement would be made about bin Laden having been killed. But I knew what would happen if I stuck around -- I'd get so involved I'd never catch up on the work that I had to get done.

My next peek at DU was on my lunch break today, and I was shocked to find that it was on Level One. That hasn't happened since, when, the '06 elections? I never dreamed I'd see those blue and yellow X avatars again. But even worse, I didn't get to contribute to the official DU reaction. Unlike with, say, Steve Colbert's correspondent's dinner speech, Rush Limbaugh being fired from ESPN, or the '06 elections, there will be no DU record of my contribution to the reaction to bin Laden's death.

I did see most of Rachel Maddow Monday evening on my dinner break, so I guess I can consider myself caught up -- though I must say that I find bin Laden's being dumped overboard and the release of the photo of the White House situation room looking like they were playing a video game more than a little tacky.

I apologize for my absence, but the alternative was guaranteed destitution. And I'm afraid I'll be tied up for at least one day more...What, people threw eggs at Justin Bieber? I'm there, dudes!

1. We were at Level Two for a while last night.
You missed it!

The people in the Situation Room were watching the mission in Pakistan as it happened.

:)
