Even though we know going in we will likely lose our pets it doesn't help because along the way they become our family and our best friends. It won't get better but it will get easier.

17. Condolences on your loss
Losing your "family member" after so many years is very, very difficult. I lost my Penny last January after 14 years. Six months later, her 20 year old "brother" had to be put down. My children grew up with them. It was like losing another part of my family.

Again, my sympathy.

59. Ahh
so sorry it is a sad reminder. I LOVE Tuxedo cats (one is sleeping on my lap right now), he's 15. I had another Tuxedo who died two years ago this month of FELV only 7, and another cat died this month (age 19) four years ago, so May is a sad reminder for me of their loss. (((HUGS))) from a fellow cat lover. Do you have any pictures of your kitty?

27. There are times when our animal family members' deaths hit us perhaps even harder
than our fellow humans' passings.

People can at least express their pain and needs. With our pets, the best we can do is try to sense it or make educated guesses.

But it's no less painful, no less significant, no less a loss. Our animals give us unconditional love - something many humans can't get behind even while we're supposedly the superior beings.

My deepest condolences. I've had that broken heart myself too many times, and sometimes when I look at Goldie our dog, or dB, Betty, Onnie, and Barney, our cats, I know that pain is gonna come someday for me too. I was even amazed at how much of a mess I became when Lucy, our little hamster, died. Sheesh.

Much love and sympathy to you. Eighteen years! That was a wonderful long life. None of my cats has ever lived that long.

not doing too badly, though she has to have three different meds each day. But I know it's just a matter of time, and I am sad already. I will also be devastated when she goes. We love our pets so much. I am very sorry that you have lost a dear companion of so many years.

I love her more and more every day, and I cherish the time I've had with her. So far she's still going strong and is even frisky on occasion.

46. Gaston - my Maine Coon
Died just shy of 17 this winter. He was a massive fella, at 21 lbs., and was the most friendly cat I've encountered save my Roma, which is a stray I saved last winter from starvation.

I miss Gaston and his playful spirit every day. He was a house cat, and could fetch like a dog. He always seemed to know when I needed him, too, because he would climb in my lap.

My friend gave my something very special: http://www.pacificurns.com/products.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=146&category_id=10

It reminds me of Gaston every time I see it. It reminds me of my big boy pouncing on something and playing with it. It includes a little funnel you can use to put some of your cats hair or ashes into the charm if you are into that. I'm not really, the memory of it is enough for me, and the memory of my big boy.

I think some part of his spirit resides in the cat I saved from starvation - she was truly pathetic, and now is thriving. I can't get her to fetch - that seemed to be the big boy's realm alone :).

I hope you find peace, my friend. Our friends don't always walk on two legs, and it is devastating.

Edited on Sun May-01-11 06:30 PM by The Wizard
It was sudden and he took his last breath on the way to the vet. My constant companion would watch hockey games with me and generally follow me around. I miss him as do all who knew him. A friend to all.
They give us unconditional love and loyalty. They are always in our memories.

60. I am so sorry.
Animals are our perfect love.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
