does anyone know why many youtube videos are now posted as youtu.be?

I seem to be encountering this a lot recently, it makes the youtube link unrecognizable here on DU.

before I put on my tinfoil hat, I thought maybe some of you have encountered this before and could explain it?

as an example, I tried to post this video of a demo in manhattan to no avail

1. That's YouTube's link-shortening function.
You should be able to get the full URL by going to the page on YouTube.
