Occupy Protesters Mobilize for Obama’s Visit
By MATT FLEGENHEIMER

More than 100 Occupy Wall Street protesters marched to a Midtown hotel on Wednesday night to protest a fund-raising event for President Obama.

Escorted by police vehicles as they helped snarl traffic across the Times Square area, beginning at Bryant Park, the group settled in front of barricades on the southwest corner of 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue, in view of the Sheraton hotel at which Mr. Obama was expected to appear by 9 p.m.

Demonstrators held signs that leveled some of the Occupy protest’s most pointed criticism to date of the president. “Obama is a corporate puppet,” one said. “War crimes must be stopped, no matter who does them,” read another, beside head shots of President George W. Bush and President Obama.

<...>

Ben Campbell, 28, one of the march’s organizers, said he hoped to prove to skeptics of the protests that the demonstrators were political critics of equal opportunity.

“President Obama is coming to town solely to raise money from the richest of the rich,” Mr. Campbell said.

This doesn't surprise me. Occupy is protesting against the war on the 99%. Obama is trying to raise money from the 1%, the same folks that are waging class war against the 99%. Obviously that's going to rub many people the wrong way.

2. My Favorite Wingnut sent me a link to this story with the following comment:
"These people must not have gotten the memo. Obama hates America just like them."

Here is my response:

You folks really don't get it, do you? Watching the Right Wing trying to make sense of OWS & the current world is like watching a dog trying to read a physics text.

6. "Obama is trying to raise money from the 1%..." So??? These people know Obama wants to raise their
taxes and they still want to support him against the likes of the Koch Brothers who want to set back the country's policies 100 years. Why should we have a problem with that? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot...

20. +1.
I wonder if people like George Clooney are suddenly "the enemy" because they're rich, no matter how much ass they bust for progressive causes.

21. Thank you.
There are quite a few here and out there who seem to be doing exactly what the RWers are saying they're doing-protesting against rich people just because they're rich. It's sad that those protesting Obama's fundraisers don't realize that there ARE some good 1%ers who WANT to pay more in taxes.

Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 10:55 PM by FrenchieCat
They have allowed the Republicans to trash them in every sense of the words....
so their aim here is excellent! That will show those who have dismissed them
and lied about them out of hand, that the lies can continue.....

I hope the OWS will bring "change" sooner than Pres. Obama said he would....
Because personally, I'd like the last 30 years to be fixed like by next week.
Hope they are up to it...!

23. I disagree with this action. Obama has helped the 99% 100 times more than hurt them
I do not see how this action helps the 99%.

25. Low Hanging Fruit.....
Doing what is most easy. Plus it will get attention from the corporate media,
because the media will like reporting on this much more than if folks
were working to get some ballot initiatives in various states on the ballot for 2012
like one asking voters to vote on outlawing money in our elections, and another
proclaiming that Money is not free speech, and that Corporations aren't people.

Just think the what if we could get beaucoup bodies organized against money running our elections,
what a difference that could make in short order!

Oh well. A girl can dream, can't she?

26. OWS doesn't like the status quo.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 11:31 PM by Cali_Democrat
OWS thinks the status quo is a defacto class war against the 99% and it's true.

Whether it's a Repub or a Dem, they will go after anybody they see as defending the 1% and the status quo. When the President of the United States hires a JP Morgan bankster to be his chief of staff and attempts to raise money from Wall Street for his campaign, OWS will object!

27. I still think that what I am proposing as action in terms of ballot initiative
Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 11:53 PM by FrenchieCat
would be more meaningful than standing around with signs.....
in terms of actually "Changing" the Status Quo.
Giving voters this to vote on could make the difference as
many people want money out of politics....but have never been given the chance
to vote on such an issue in a clear cut way.

I'm sure that the Occupy Wall Street folks will realize this one day soon.....
