Chapel Hill Mayor invited by Pres Obama to attend tonight's game UNC v Michigan State
on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego!

Yeah for Chapel Hill!

For those who don't know--Mark Kleinschmidt is the first openly gay mayor of Chapel Hill and won his
re-election bid on Tuesday with 78% of the vote.

I just received this e-mail from the Town of Chapel Hill:

Chapel Hill Mayor invited by President Obama to basketball game aboard the Navy Aircraft Carrier
Posted Date: 11/11/2011
Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt was invited by President Obama and Mrs. Obama to San Diego to attend the Carrier Classic featuring a basketball game between the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans.

The game will be played on the deck of the United State Navy Aircraft Carrier - The USS Carl Vinson. This is the aircraft carrier that buried Osama bin Laden at sea.

More than 7,000 fans, including Mayor Kleinschmidt, will board the carrier to see the teams battle in the first match on an active flat top. Attendees will include active military personnel and their families, veterans, selected guests from the participating universities, and other stakeholders. Tickets are not for sale to the general public.

"This Veterans Day, President Obama will honor our nation's veterans by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and then by traveling to San Diego, California, to attend the Carrier Classic on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson," the White House said in a statement. "He looks forward to a great game between Michigan State and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill."

The game, a rematch of the epic 2009 NCAA Championship final, will be the first college basketball contest of the 2011-2012 season televised on ESPN. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

2. I just hope it's a 'screw you, Richard Burr' who recently was quoted
as saying Obama didn't stand a chance of taking NC in 2012 and what a big mistake it was to schedule
the Dem Convention in Charlotte.

I admit I was never a fan of Obama--and time has proved me right--but geeesh...the alternatives are
horrendous. Mitt? Perry? Michele?

4. The game is supposed to be funded by private donors and corporate sponsors

"Most of the Carl Vinson's crew is on leave, so the preparations haven't interfered with the ship's operations. From the Navy's perspective, the game is excellent training for the Carl Vinson's upcoming deployment."

5. Posted this on my fb page and brought out a right wing 'friend'
from when I lived in Missouri.

Oh, boy, they can't STAND the idea that Obama is going to get a photo op on the aircraft carrier
which ditched Osama's remains--and are criticizing Obama for going to San Diego! (How many children
could be fed by the money allocated to the travel?)

What, the President isn't allowed to travel the country to honor Vets?!?

The hypocrisy is amazing.

8. i thought the setting was nicely done and the President gave a good speech pre-game
And the expected Tar Heel victory capped off the night very well.
