Watch The Excruciating Agony As Rick Perry Gets Confused, Forgets His Own Plan Mid-Sentence
TPM: Watch The Excruciating Agony As Rick Perry Gets Confused, Forgets His Own Plan Mid-Sentence

Rick Perry, already under widespread criticism for his listless debate performance, found a way to dig himself into a deeper hole on Wednesday night by forgetting which executive branch departments he would eliminate mid-answer. Even in a campaign loaded with cringe-worthy debate moments, this was easily the low point for any candidate.

The Texas governor drawled through his plan to cut three government agencies, but then stumbled and admitted that he couldn’t recall which ones they were.

“And I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when i get there that are gone,” he said. “Commerce, education, and the — what’s the third one there? Let’s see.”

He proceeded to struggle a bit while his rivals and the moderators tried to jog his memory.

<...>

Daily Kos:

OMG, Rick Perry just said he would eliminate three agencies of the Federal government if he gets elected. He started to name them...and then forgot the third. Completely drew a blank. Whoa. He just screwed himself good.

Think Progress:

...Quote of the night: “Oops.”

Rick Perry: “Commerce, education, and the umm, what’s the third one there? Let’s see… The third agency of government I would do away with – education, uh the, commerce, and let’s see, I can’t. The third one I can’t. Sorry. Oops.”

<...>

...Let’s not let pass that Perry’s plan to cut the Commerce Department, the Education Department, and a department to be named later would mean an end to the federal student loan program.

Or taking drugs. Smoking pot maybe? I bet he doesn't realize how badly he comes across until later.

doesn't have Alzheimer's, and, you're right, it's nothing to make light of.

Perry is just a kook.

Not this generation’s Einstein by a long shot.
Slow brain IMO.
He’s done, was already done IMO.

Bad moment for him. Good for Herman as the media will be showing Perry’s brain freeze incessantly for the next few days, giving Herman a break.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: South40
I felt sorry for him. He really sucks at debating, but was trying so hard to do it well. And then he couldn’t remember the name of the third department he would cut. It was like watching a kid at a school play forget the lines . . .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: South40
Great, a candidate that can’t remember his own ideas.

Yes. Very presidential.

Just wow. We all warned them but they just wouldn’t listen.

How long now til he officially quits the race?

To: BAW
Agreed. I came out against Perry and caught huge Shi@t. Not proud at this moment.

He was rolling along just fine. I thought he was having his best debate performance ever. Then...BAM!

It was painful to watch. I felt bad for him.

20. As far as I can tell there is NOBODY on the Dem side as goofy as these "candidates".
A Foxbot would probably bellow "Barnie Frank!" (or even "Soros!") at this, but I'm sorry, we have no Rick Perrys. We have no Cains. No Bachmanns, no Palins.

There is no equivalency here, false or otherwise. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the lunatic politicians on display right now are members of the republican church. They are worshipped by their acolytes, but people with brains see a gaggle of fools and tools, nothing more.

16. Umm.. Isn't his whole campaign about his energy policy?
Get rid of all the regulation and focus on unearthing all the resources of the country.
That is his jobs plan. Pretty funny he forgot he wants to be rid of the Department of Energy to do it.

18. You just made me want to look up Dept of Energy and see exactly
what they do.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material. Its responsibilities include the nation's nuclear weapons program, nuclear reactor production for the United States Navy, energy conservation, energy-related research, radioactive waste disposal, and domestic energy production. DOE also sponsors more basic and applied scientific research than any other US federal agency; most of this is funded through its system of United States Department of Energy National Laboratories.

19. When I'm talking to people I never say "here are my three points" or anything like that.
A strange little thing I have observed in myself and others (including Perry) is that if I say "Here are the N things I am talking about" and then try to list them, I will invariably only be able to remember N-1 of them. This happens over and over (and over).

At first I tried remembering an extra thing, so when I forgot one I would have a spare, but that doesn't always work.

The only way to avoid this silly problem is to never set yourself up for epic failure in public by saying "There are five points I want to make" or anything of the kind. No numbers!

This is probably why Palin wrote her (seemingly obvious) talking points (N=3) on her hand that time. Why didn't Perry try that trick?
