Mitch McConnell: Obama jobs bill was designed to make Republicans look bad for rejecting it

by Jed Lewison

Some turtles I know have more brains than to make an argument this weak:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday that the White House intentionally “designed” President Barack Obama’s $447 billion jobs bill to “fail” with the hopes of making Republicans appear “intransigent.”

This was not — I repeat — not a serious effort to do something about jobs and the economy,” McConnell said. “It was a serious effort to help the president’s re-election campaign by making Republicans in Congress look intransigent.”

<...>

There really isn't any reason for Republicans to say no to President Obama's jobs bill other than politics. It consists entirely of broadly popular proposals, many supported by more than two-thirds of the public. Check out CNN's polling on each of the key provisions:

Poor Mitch, being exposed for economic sabotage.

Edited to fix link.

43. The evidence is all right there. Republicans are clearly trying to destroy the economy to hurt Obama
If Obama and the Dems hammered this home, HARD, Obama would coast to reelection victory.

A more confrontational approach is needed.

they make themselves look bad by refusing to govern.
i look forward to a serious trouncing of the republicans in 2012. they keep on pulling this shit. what pisses me off is the way the media repeats these ridiculous talking points as if there is any merit whatsoever to them. for instance that obama is just campaigning instead of working on the nation's problems: well, YEAH, campaigning for JOBS for the american people, something the fucking republicans promised and reneged on, big time.

GAWD i hate them.

edited for clarity.

They could have picked looking good. In fact they could have stepped it up a notch and made Obama look bad for not proposing enough. They could have gone more populist. There is freedom and they were free to pick their approach to this.

then, maybe, they should have I dunno tried to work with President Obama and the Democrats in Congress to you know pass something? They look even worse for even refusing to allow a freakin' VOTE on the package IMHO! But then again, when do they ever really care about how they come across to most people?

33. He is right, their pitiful little scams Obama has rehashed to push some
kind of stimulus that theoretically could pass is not a serious effort. A serious effort would have them falling out all over the corporate media gnashing their nasty teeth about Maoism or whatever nonsense lies they'd have to escalate to from their standard "Marxist" they throw at standard Republican policy offerings served up by a black guy with a (D) next to his name.

Fuckwits and devilish assholes the whole lot and McTurtle is one of the scummy.

37. I'm so sick of Repigs making excuses a 3rd grader wouldn't try!
Here it is in a microcosm: I work for the airlines, and a pilot started screaming at me right in front of passengers. I let it go because I didn't want to stop my work just to get up in his face. But within five minutes, he was whinging to my boss, and talking about how I ****embarrassed*** him in front of everyone. I pointed out that he didn't need my help, he embarrassed himself all BY himself. What I didn't say--and what I really didn't need to ask cuz I knew the answer--was if he had an "R" on his voter registration.

Because this is what they do: they engage in belligerent and destructive behavior, and it's always someone else's fault. From the home to the workplace to the House and Senate, the pattern is the same.

46. He's right in the sense that the government has very little control over the economy
But that goes for everything his side proposes as well. You can't spend your way out of a crappy economy nor can you tax cut or de-regulate out your way out of one. The economy is controlled by a myriad of factors, most of which are beyond the government's control.

What you can do (and what the Democrats want to do) is spend money to create jobs and provide benefits that will alleviate the suffering of the unemployed until the economy recovers. What Mitch would rather do is use the crappy economy to trickle the wealth up to people who don't need it.

49. He should re-introduce it again - now, just after the elections and see
how many keep their resolve to vote no against everything. And keep reintroducing it on the 1st of each month between now and Nov. Reid could do a reverse filibuster - bring it up each day as the first order of business and make them vote it down before they proceed with anything else.
