Bike path funding survives Senate vote

You know an attack on funding for bike paths and other transportation enhancement projects is off the deep end when this happens:

The Senate has defeated the third effort in less than two months to eliminate federal transportation funding for bike paths, walking trails and other transportation enhancement projects.

Sixty senators voted Tuesday against an amendment by Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul forbidding the government from spending any money on enhancement projects and re-directing funds to bridge repairs.

During the debate, Paul resurrected the discredited nonsense about wasteful turtle tunnels, only to be smacked down by Barbara Boxer:

But Boxer followed Paul to the floor and said if his amendment cleared, it would prevent funds from being spent on historic bridges, like the Brooklyn Bridge, or on bicycle paths that would reduce traffic casualties.

“The amendment prevents a bridge from being fixed if it is a historic bridge," said Boxer. "There are thousands of those in this country, including the Brooklyn Bridge."
