Candidate Bachmann brushes off hurricane joke
MIAMI (Reuters) - Republican White House hopeful Michele Bachmann insisted on Monday she was joking when she said a hurricane and quake were God's warning to Washington, in an effort to control the damage from her latest controversial comments.

The Tea Party favorite raised eyebrows with a weekend remark to supporters in Florida that Hurricane Irene, which killed at least 24 people and left millions without power, and an East Coast earthquake were God's way of telling politicians to cut spending and fix the budget deficit.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?'" Bachmann said at a campaign event in Sarasota on Sunday.

"Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending," she said

1. She was joking about God? How is that going to go over with her base?
This incident illustrates the problem Bachmann has as she transitions from being a regional politician who can feed her message to a narrow constituency to a politician on the national stage. Her constituency back home loves the "God hates liberals and sends hurricanes to smite them" message. Voters in a presidential election, not so much (although the national constituency for this kind of thing is growing all the time.)

6. Her base will figure IOKIYAR
So it won't hurt her. However, her numbers are unlikely to grow among independents.

2. THAT'S a joke?
uh uh.
T Paw is a joke.
Sarah Palin is a joke.
Rick Smutorium is a joke.

This is NOT a joke.

I am actually sorry she said this, so soon. She just demolished her own campaign, and now that Perry is the flavor of the month, with millionaires and billionaires behind his dumb ass, I suspect that her numbers will continue to drop like last russian rocket intended for our international space base.

11. Many people are more idiotic than Michele Bachmann
Specifically, people who would vote for her.

8. She meant what she said -- I don't think she was joking
Later, her people insisited she was (or at least her spokeswoman). Based on her past batshit crazy babblings, with a foundation in her extremist religious beliefs and backers (who will support Perry over her, sorry, Bachmann), she meant what she said. And then after they backtracked.

She's desperate and now in Pawlenty Land, where she'll say anything and pander pander pander to get the attenion back. Perry took it away. She will go after him (that's what she's like).
