Stupak disavows emails coordinating with Senate GOP on abortion

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Saturday that emails implying he'd coordinated with Senate Republicans to oppose an abortion compromise were "unauthorized."
The Michigan centrist, the author of an amendment to the House's health reform bill curtailing federal support for health plans covering abortion, rejected the Senate language on abortion that was released on Saturday to win Sen. Ben Nelon's (D-Neb.) support for the bill.
But the Michigan Democrat said that emails showing one of his aides coordinating with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) staff on blocking that compromise language were without his permission.
"While I appreciate the efforts of all the parties involved, especially Senator Ben Nelson, the Senate abortion language is not acceptable," Stupak said in a statement.
"Earlier today an unauthorized email from a member of my staff was sent to interested parties," Stupak added. "I was unaware of this email and it was sent without my knowledge or approval. The above statement reflects my position on the proposed Senate language."
