Obama to introduce specific plan to boost economy -"If Congress Doesn't Act, We'll Run Against them"

President Obama: I Will Introduce Specific Plan in September to Boost Economy -- and If Congress Doesn't Act, We'll Run Against Them
August 15, 2011 7:03 PM

In response to a question at a town hall in Decorah, Iowa, Monday evening, President Obama said that when Congress returns in September, "I'll be putting forward...a very specific plan to boost the economy, to create jobs and to control our deficit. And my attitude is get it done.

"And if they don't get it done," he continued, "then we'll be running against a Congress that isn't doing anything for the American people and the choice will be very stark and very clear."

"What I can do is to present my best ideas about how we move the country forward," the president said. "Many, many of these ideas traditionally have had Republican support. It’s amusing to watch one of the major Republican candidates now trying to wriggle out of the fact that my health care bill is very similar to the health care bill he passed at a time when he, he needed to compromise because he was living in a Democratic-majority state."

The president continued, "some of these folks know better, all I can do is to say I’m going to take the best ideas we have from everyone, Republicans, independents and Democrats, present to them, 'This is what you should do.' I can’t force them to do it, you can force them to do it. I will take my case to the American people that this vision is how we move the country forward and if they have an alternative vision and they don’t want to sit there and do nothing for the next 16 months while unemployment is still high and small businesses are still suffering, then ultimately they are going to be held to account by you, just like I’m going to be held to account by you."

Said the president, "We’ve got to reward folks that are more serious about solving problems than scoring political points."

14. Patent Reform can go a long way, software and non-functional design patents...
...are a scourge to innovation.

Not sure if that's where he's suggesting we reform, mind you.

23. Reform is speeding up the time paperwork Apps take. Making it first come first served.
SO filing to beat others becomes standard, rather than whats legit, but applies second.

4. From the good news/bad news file...
Good news: He's intending to put a plan out there, support it, and force Congress to run on it and dare the Republicans to vote against it. Many have said he should do this and now he's saying he's going to do it.

Bad news: "Many, many of these ideas traditionally have had Republican support." Yes, just what we need more of. And that approach has worked out soooooo well for him in the past.

Does he have some sort of short term amnesia that prevents him from remembering what results he keeps getting from this approach, and what results happened as recently as 2 weeks ago?

15. sorry, folks, Wally World is closed for repairs.
On health care, Obama says that he said in the campaign that a single-payer system wouldn't happen. He says it was a "landmark piece of legislation" and that the process was "messy."

28. There are a Long List of Things Which "Traditionally Have Republican Support"
including 90% tax brackets, the EPA, Obama's own health insurance plan, a negative income tax, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and affirmation action.

As a party, the GOP has rejected those pretty firmly. I don't know which proposals Obama is referring to, but that casts a pretty wide net.

6. A courageously honest and evergreen review of one's priorities is a good thing for everyone to do.
It's called reality testing and it helps in identifying if one has placed one's personal truths ahead of other truths and what one is willing to see sacrificed to that priority.

Free trade deals!

Hopefully I am surprised and it's actually a legitimate jobs bill, in the vein of an infrastructure bank bill.

8. " more serious about solving problems
than scoring political points"

Obama could be describing himself, since if he was serious about this he would have done it a few years ago. Doing it now is all about the 2012 election, ie, "scoring political points".

suggesting - instead of putting the money on a big jobs program that'll get hammered by the Rethugs and (they say) make him out to be a loser, they want him to go ahead and pass little pieces of unimportant legislation to show that "he's relevant and wins with Congress". Wait and see.

supposed to run against the Republicans no matter what they do? Isn't that
the way the two party system works? Isn;t his job to define the differences in the
policies and build value for his own ideas?

which have been disastrous for 30 years, and dare them to support them. I don't see how this can win for him.
