Or, he will lose the nomination.

Perry or Bachmann will win the Iowa caucus, so Romney has to finish strong in New Hampshire. If Perry beats him in N.H. or even comes in a very close second, Romney will be cooked.

After N.H., there are the Nevada caucus and the S.C. primary. Romney will probably take Nevada, and Perry will win S.C. Next is Florida on Jan. 31st. If Romney loses that, then it's truly all over for him.

The early primaries and caucuses schedule favor Perry.

Bottom line is this, for Romney to win the nomination, he needs to start going negative against Perry by Labor day.

1. Yes. When the 'serious candidates' turn on each other, it will be sweet. nt

4. Good observation. Got me wondering if Romney actually has it in him - it'll be risky.
It will piss off the fundy base, and both Bachmann (future VP nominee on Perry's ticket) and Perry can beat Romney over the head with that.

So, the question is, does Romney have it in him to take a gamble that there are more non-insane Republican voters out there than insane Republican voters?

I don't think he's all that confident that there's a possible non-insane/insane ratio that works for him. He's already made some obligatory fundy-pleasing (and TP-pleasing) noises right off the bat in his campaign, which means he thinks he needs their votes.

I'll lay odds that Romney ends up dropping out.
