Tim Pawlenty: I'm Still In
Tim Pawlenty: I'm still in

By ALEXANDER BURNS
8/13/11 6:56 PM EDT

That's the message from this statement, just out from Pawlenty campaign headquarters:

“Congratulations to Congresswoman Michele Bachmann for her victory in today's straw poll. We made progress in moving from the back of the pack into a competitive position for the caucuses, but we have a lot more work to do. This is a long process to restore America — we are just beginning and I'm looking forward to a great campaign."

Pawlenty's final position put him 15 percentage points and 2,530 ballots behind Michele Bachmann. That's not a close margin and, as Maggie and I wrote earlier this week, Pawlenty desperately needed a boost from this event. What does he tell his donors now?

2. And still boring
Yawn.

They all have pretty much the same message, except for Ron Paul. Timmy can't get any traction because he's duller than dirt. Why vote for him when you can vote for a louder version like MIchele.

3. Who cares.
It's a straw poll. If Pawlenty tanks during the caucuses, that is a different story.

Far too much attention is paid to a meaningless poll.

4. Not if the WSJ has anything to say about it
They made a point of how hard he tried to get half the votes Bachmann did.

"Mrs. Bachmann garnered 4,823 votes. Mr. Paul was close behind with 4,671. Mr. Pawlenty received 2,293 after pouring money and time into organizing for the contest."
