MoveOn opposes Senate health bill, urges Democrats to block legislation

Liberal MoveOn.org opposes Senate health bill
Five million-member progressive group urges Democrats to block legislation
Associated Press
December 18, 2009

WASHINGTON - The liberal group MoveOn.org is opposing the Senate health care bill and urging Democrats to block it.

In a letter to members Friday, MoveOn.org complained that the legislation has no government-run insurance option and no expansion of Medicare.

It urged its members to sign a petition saying, "American needs real health care reform — not a massive giveaway to the insurance companies."

The letter also called on members to send a message to Senate progressives such as Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Roland Burris of Illinois and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin to "block this bill until it's fixed."

MoveOn Opposes Senate Health Bill
Stephanie Condon
CBS News
December 18, 2009

The liberal grassroots group MoveOn.org, which claims five million members, announced to its membership today that it is joining the liberal opposition to the Senate health care bill.

In an e-mail sent out today, the group is asking its supporters to sign a petition urging liberal senators like Bernie Sanders, the Independent from Vermont who has serious reservations about the bill, to block its passage.

"The latest Senate health care bill has no public option. No expansion of Medicare. And it does too little to guarantee that uninsured Americans will actually be able to afford the coverage they'll be required to purchase," the e-mail reads. "But it's not too late to fix the bill. And as Joe Lieberman has shown, just one senator willing to stand in the way can force legislation to be changed dramatically."

2. There are new additions to the bill worked out in the Nelson compromise.
I'll wait for the final bill before I decide how I feel.

4. Agreed. And, there are some good things in the bill as it stands.
For example we'll be able to buy into the same non-profit plan that federal employees have at their disposal. That's something Dean advocated for when he ran for President.

5. The negatives far out-weigh the positives
And that non-profit ability is not open to all Americans, only a select few. Again, it's not HCR...it's selective benefits.

6. I don't know that I agree. I don't like the mandates, but if we're
mandating that ins. co's cover everyone with pre-existing conditions, we have to pay for that by expanding the pool, KWIM?

9. This is not reform. It doesn't have to be perfect, but to force people
to buy insurance, screw women's rights and so on is NOT WORTH IT!

10. people should have to buy health insurance, I really and truly
believe that. I've always believed it when I was young and healthy (and good looking I may add), I've always had health insurance when I could get it. the way i understand it if you can't afford it, you will have some type of help to get some. to me that is a good idea, people need to look further down the road instead of living just for the day. health insurance instead of a pack of cig's and a bottle of liquor.

11. "People should have to buy health insurance"??
If you really truly believe that fattening the pockets of the insurance titans is dandy, then why would you oppose throwing money at the tobacco and spirits industries?

14. because when the spirits and tobacco take their course with them
where do they go? to the hospital, and now that they've wasted all of their money, (and youth) they want help. which you and I would then have to pay for.
