The Tea Party, the debt ceiling, and white Southern extremism
http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/08/02/lind_tea_party/index.html

Today’s Tea Party movement is merely the latest of a series
of attacks on American democracy by the white Southern minority,
which for more than two centuries has not hesitated to paralyze,
sabotage or, in the case of the Civil War, destroy American democracy
in order to get their way.

snip

From the earliest years of the American republic, white Southern
conservatives when they have lost elections and found themselves
in the political minority have sought to extort concession from national
majorities by paralyzing or threatening to destroy the United States.

7. Something Everyone Should See If They Get The Chance

Georgia has an enormous natural wonder called Stone Mountain which, as the name suggests, is a monotholic solid rock the size of a mountain.

And, damned if they didn't see fit to desecrate the face of such a thing with one of the largest bas relief sculptures, if not THE largest, of the heroes of the Confederacy - Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis - triumphant on horseback for fuck's sake.

Those motherfucking bastard rebs will never give it up - never.

Sherman had these folks right figured out. They don't give it up until you pry it from their cold, dead fingers.

10. See you soon, then...

I have a brother who is moving from San Francisco to Alpharetta, and I have a feeling he's going to need a lot of moral support.

11. A bit facile
The GOP has come to embody resentment over the perceived loss of prestige that came with the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. That some parts of the party embody and concentrate those qualities more than the rest should be expected.
