Dear Mr. President
Edited on Sat Aug-06-11 11:31 AM by Cali_Democrat
In light of the recent helicopter crash in Afghanistan that has taken the lives of 25 Navy SEALS, I'd like you to reconsider your position about keeping our troops there for another 3 years. The war in Afghanistan has proven to be an unmitigated disaster and the Afghan people no longer want us occupying their country.

At a time when austerity measures are being considered and cuts to entitlement programs are on the table, it's time that we rethink our military spending. We need to stop wasting money on pointless wars abroad that have cost us well over $3 trillion dollars and the lives of thousands of US troops, not to mention the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Please end these wars, Mr. President as we can no longer afford the cost in blood and treasure. Also, the pointless wars have done nothing to benefit the security of the United States.

Sincerely,
Cali_Democrat

8. K & R. How sad this day

and these times are, and how sick and sadder still that anyone would still endorse the human and economic costs of this war to the detriment of this country and the futile loss of life there. How bizarre that it brings, instead, instant silent anger and disapproval at the mere fact of your plea.

10. Thanks for the recs everybody
Much appreciated.

Unfortunately there are folks who have no interest in ending these wars immediately and that's sad, especially at a time when cuts to SS and Medicare are being discussed.

11. Remember--the military is the ONLY jobs program we have.
It would be a better jobs program if we were in peacetime and people were learning skills that would transfer directly to the private sector (sadly, small unit tactics, explosive ordinance disposal, and shooting at people aren't all that transferable--electronics, GPS, logistics, and heavy machinery driving are).

My prediction is as soon as the active military intervention stops, the rightwing calls to fire people--excuse me, "reduction in force"--people from the military will start in earnest. And that's a crying shame.
