Any GOP Senator who voted against the debt deal "will be ineligible to serve on the supercommittee"
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 02:17 PM by ClarkUSA
Senate GOP sources tell the Weekly Standard that senators who vote against the debt ceiling legislation today will be ineligible to serve on the so-called "supercommittee" for deficit reduction that the legislation creates.

"Excluding those who vote against the debt deal will ensure that some of the most fiscally conservative members of the Senate Republican caucus, including most of its freshmen, will be reading about the committee's activities in the newspaper rather than guiding its decisions."

Among those who have already declared their opposition to the deal: libertarian-leaning senators Mike Lee and Rand Paul; Jim DeMint, the aggressive fiscal hawk from South Carolina; conservative reformers Ron Johnson from Wisconsin and Pat Toomey from Pennsylvania; the ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee, Jeff Sessions; and Florida’s Marco Rubio, already one of the highest-profile conservatives in Congress.

2. Translation:
You Teabaggers almost drove us into the ditch. We're not going on the hook for your crazy again!

The screaming and wailing and gnashing of teeth over this deal drags on, but I think the long-term investment, as it were, will pay off.

;-)

9. Here's hoping the Democrats don't follow that precedent. They should select all "no" votes. n/t

11. Sanders voted "no" but "embraced" the McConnell plan which originated this "supercommittee" idea.
Sorry, I'd prefer people who didn't play games. I hope Senators Leahy and Franken sit on the supercommittee. They were the first two Senators who sent out statements in support of this debt deal. Both are committed liberals who are pragmatic and shun the media whore soapbox.

12. I don't think the McConnell plan locked in 2.4 trillion in spending cuts.

Edit: Here's what Bernie Sanders http://sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/news/?id=BC108D81-AB34-47C7-973F-E49F9BA0AC7E">actually said:

"In a phrase he probably never uttered before, Sanders embraced a proposal by the Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to raise the debt ceiling now and debate what to do about deficits during the 2012 campaign."

That's hardly what we got. And it would be much better than what we got.

13. The McConnell plan would have staved off default for only six months.
Stupid idea.

14. I don't think that's true either. And that's certainly not what Sanders endorsed.
You should actually read what his release says. I quote it in an edit to the post you just replied to.

17. He said he "embraced... McConnell's proposal" and said "I agree with Mitch McConnell."
It's pretty clear what he endorsed.

15. I doubt they will be picked
Leahy is Chair of the Judiciary Committee and Franken is about as Junior as can be. I suspect that the people picked will be high in senorita and involved in the type of committees that do this kind of work. My best guess is Durbin, Conrad and one other. That other will likely be Baucus, Warner or Schumer. Durbin, Warner and Conrad were in the Gang of six. Conrad is Chair of the Budget committee. Durbin is second to Reid in leadership. Baucus is Chair of Finance (which is related). Schumer is in leadership and seems to have been pushing to get a role here.

20. Because the Dems who voted NO wanted to protect the American people. The GOP who voted NO
wanted to destroy the safety net.
