4. Yeah, because he's such a lefty.

People always want the myth. If the politician isn't selling one himself, they project one onto him regardless of how unrealistic it is.

Projecting myths, chasing rainbows.

5. Well, he was adamently & vocally opposed to the Iraq War...
when the press freely painted all opponents as Loonies or traitors. He has NEVER ceased to be an adamant supporter of Medicare and Social Security and those regulations that protect our environment, food safety and transportation.

So, he may be fairly centrist by your standards, but I would damn well have welcomed that. Can anyone seriously argue that we would not have been better off if Gore had rightfully assumed the WH in 20001 and GWB* had slipped into the bottom of a bottle in obscurity in Texas?

11. I do like Al Gore, but do note that he was one of few Dems to vote FOR first Gulf War...
when papa Bush was running the shop.

13. and one of the very very FEW to have the guts to speak out against
Iraq War when everyone was villainizing those who did not walk in lock step. I see the vote on the first Gulf War as irrelevant, given there actually was an invasion of Kuwait-- no matter how complicit we were in our mixed messages to Sadaam Hussein. The created case for the second Gulf War was quite quite different and Gore showed remarkable strength in his very vocal opposition--even as Bush* Cheney were saturating the public with lies about impending nuclear threats.

16. Don't want to sound like I'm against him. I'm not. I wanted him to run for president last time...
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 08:25 PM by cascadiance
Yes, that was a different time. Just wanted to make sure we understand he's not just "anti-war", but votes the way he does for certain reasons. Reasons in the first Gulf War that he thought were justified then.

Still love Barbara Lee for being the lone voice in the House to vote against the Afghanistan War for the latest Bush...

12. Of course not.
But the idea that Gore would be a raging left-winger if he were still in politics is wide of the mark. He was, like Obama, a very moderate Democrat.

As with many politicians, we've seen more of his true persona since he left that business. He'd have been a decent President. Probably a one termer simply because people would have been 'ready' for a change after 12 years (sadly just enough were 'ready' to make the 2000 election as close as it was) but I think it would have ensured that a more moderate Republican assumed the reigns. Every time a Republican wins the White House, the shift to the right becomes harder and harder to counter.

14. Compared to today's crop, Gore actually is a lefty...
Considering the Dems have moved so far beyond centrist to the right.... Gore sounds more like Sanders than he does Obama.

15. In 2000 wasn't the meme that Democrats & Republicans were the same?
Which made it ok to vote for Nader since Gore would have obviously done things as Bush did, got us into the same wars, made the same SC nominations.
