say that we have been screwed - not yet anyway. Maybe will get screwed, but no deal is agreed other than what we know Reid and McConnell have sitting in their back pockets that has been discussed.

5. yes! call your Republican and Dem senators and Reps.
We can do that to influence the deal. I understand OP's point though - many DU'ers act as if a deal has already happened. But it hasn't. Which is why we need to bombard congress

7. that's fine, but that is NOT what is being stated.
Nobody should discuss a deal that does not exist. Of course it makes sense to discuss what is being discussed and fight for what we believe, but some things get mentioned in the media and it's being treated like part of a done deal.

21. When are deals transparent?
Especially from this administration. By the time we know what the deal is the horse is out of the barn.

I actually don't care about that, mostly want DU'ers to continue bombarding our Reps and Senators about what is the right thing to do.

13. Of course. But again that is not the important part. Bombard congress, even the teabaggers
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 12:24 PM by emulatorloo
If they "represent" you. Du'ers have gotten so obsessed with "evil obama" they appear to have forgotten that REPUBLICANS are the reason we are even having this idiotic discussion about raising the debt ceiling. There are CRAzY tea baggers in the house who are more than willing to plunge the US into a major depression because of their ideological purity. No good plan is going to pass the house unless those fools are pressured by constituents. For our Dem reps, we have to support them on standing firm.

12. The nature of the negotiations IS a problem
The immediate need to raise the debt ceiling is the only crisis.

Instead of allowing the Teabaggers use that as a bludgeon, Real negotiations would be about putting together enough Democrats and Republicans to override them...There are Republicans who recognize the need to raise the ceiling (in part because their corporate backers don't want to blow up the economy).

IF Obama wants a Grand Bargain he should have seperated the two issues.

14. Some are predicting that we will be screwed.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 12:31 PM by Vattel
I hope they are wrong, but I'm not terribly optimistic. Because I suspect that any deal that is reached would be bad, I do really hope that Obama fails to get his big deal, the negotiations fall apart, and we get a simple elevation of the debt ceiling. That is still a possible outcome. If that happens, I will be happy to listen to the Obama apologists all crow about how it was Obama playing n-dimensional chess or whatever. The important thing is to avoid selling the farm.

Everything happens behind closed doors and nothing is announced until pushed through at the deadline, at which point it is too late for the masses to prevent it.

This was very carefully orchestrated to prevent the American people from being able to respond.

Well, if the deal is bad enough, then I'm prepared to bite.

22. Panic is fun.
The debate creates a great opportunity for DU members to remind their representatives what they want, or don't want.

And so threads recommending calling your representatives, or the white house ... make sense.

But all the hair on fire screaming that Obama is like the anti-Christ and HOPES to kill old people ... that is where the nonsense resides.

And sadly, its become a large part of what DU is doing. Nothing constructive, just hair on fire screaming, anytime any unnamed source does anything.
