"Are you willing to die on that hill?"
When I was a teenager, I thought a lot of things were important--worth fighting for. Most of them weren't really, but some really were. They were worth getting yelled at. Worth getting grounded for. I argued for permission to have or do many things.

My Dad would ask me a simple question: "Are you willing to die on that hill, son?" In other words, was what I was fighting for so important that I was willing to fight for it, even if I might lose on it, and face the consequences?

Through continuing the failed Bush tax cuts, negotiating against himself during the healthcare debates, not backing the public option, not even considering seriously holding BushCo responsible for war crimes, not holding Wall Street accountable for the economic destruction caused in the last three years, and calling out their co-conspirators in congress, it seems like there are damned few hills that this president is willing to politically "die on".

Today's fireworks regarding Mr. Cantor may, just MAY be an indication of a hill that the President has chosen. I've been disappointed so many times before.

What to believe....

1. Politics aside...
That's a damn good question. I am going to drop that on my son and see what he says. Thanks.

2. They made the mistake of denigrating community organizing
The methods of dealing with conflict boils down to using a chosen formula. Skills like this are learned and special, imo.

I don't always like Obama's point of view. But his skills are obvious given how the GOP jugheads are reacting. They're in over their heads. They come to the table day after day without the necessary skills.

You just don't bring polemics to discussions at that level. It's not DU or the family holiday dinner table where hostility gets served with pie & coffee.

4. Well, we've read the narratives people post about hair raising holidays with the family!
Thanks for such a nice comment. :hi:

6. Aren't there _some_ core things you have to be consistant in...

...and fight for in order to be elected by Democrats as a presidential candidate?

8. Not sure I care for the "fighting" metaphor. If politicking & political theater
is what you really care about, I'm sure you're disappointed. However, I continue to think this president is doing a spectacular job given the intransigence of the Teanutters & the PL. And guess what? Most Democrats agree with me.

9. No, I care that the President...
...doesn't care enough about his Democratic ideals that he's willing to go all the way for ONE thing the way Democrats want it, with no capitulation, no watering down, no negotiating away pieces of it before even pushing for it.

I'm sorry that you and those that agree with you are so conditioned that you're pleased with crumbs.

11. Over the top imagery aside, we just disagree. Those of us who supported
this president from the outset knew exactly what we were getting, a total departure of personalities, from the previous occupant. I believe this president when he says he'd rather build consensus, and so do Independents. The extreme ideologies of the hard left and the teanutters is a losing strategy for national elections.

A friendly suggestion? Stay away from Hamsher's FDL rag and save your blood pressure. "Compromise" is what adults do.....well, most adults anyway.
