Stop talking about a third-party candidate for 2012.
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 08:12 AM by Dawgs
Wait until 2016 when both parties will have a weak field of candidates (assuming Pres. Obama wins in 2012). It will be the best time for a charismatic, progressive candidate to run as a populist independent - assuming they don't run as a democrat.

Populist Ideas
End all wars
Tax the rich
Strengthen Social Security & Medicare
Spend on clean energy and infastructure
Pass a public option
Marriage Equality
Fair Trade policy that stops hurting American jobs/businesses
Legalize/Decriminalize Drugs

1. I don't know. A far right fringer like Palin running independent might work out.

2. I think Obama needs a little scare
not a full-fledged primary challenge or third party, but something to make him worry so he starts governing the way 2008 Candidate Obama led us to think he would.
