Poll: Bachmann surges to primary lead
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 05:08 PM by Adenoid_Hynkel
Granted, it's from the notoriously inaccurate Zogby - but still, it's good for a laugh. If only we could be so lucky...

------
Fresh off her well-received performance in last week's GOP presidential debate, Rep. Michele Bachmann now tops the field of candidates in a new Zogby poll of Republican primary voters.

The poll found Mrs. Bachmann garnering 24 percent of the vote, well-ahead of businessman Herman Cain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who each received 15 percent support.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., who officially announced his candidacy on Tuesday, scored just 2 percent support.

48. No one thought the idiot Bush could win either..and he didn't but
Republican's had everything in place to steal that election. And now for 2012 all the Republicans need is an election and they could steal another one..As many right wing electronic hackers there are out there anything is possible and Democrats are just too damn naive to see the possibility exists that 2000 and 2004 could easily happen all over again.

they were actually talking about a Bachmann-Huntsman ticket. Something for the fundies to go wild about, yet still something for Mitt's Mormon supporters to rally around.

39. Perry takes his position atop the wingnuts
if he comes in, and gets a lot of the support of the business and neocon types.

Perry is a MAJOR player in the primary if he comes in.

If not, it looks like it is Mittens to lose to Bachman ...

I don't think it will, because the more people see of her, the more they won't like her.

Romney doesn't excite anybody, but at least most GOP voters don't question his mental stability.

This will be moot once Perry enters the race.

The extremist portion of the Republican party is much more powerful today than they were in 2008. They view Romney and McCain as establishment candidates and they don't like them one bit.

This is why you see Bachman gaining momentum. She will ride it all the way to the Republican nomination. Romney may not even finish 2nd.

27. Be careful of what you wish for
Remember, kids, we're looking at the first post-Citizens United presidential election. Given enough of the Koch Brothers' money, a nation full of hackable voting machines and a compliant press, it is quite conceivable they could put Bachmann in office. Just imagine the first presidential debate:

Congresswoman Bachmann, are kittens cute?
President Obama, why did you violate the Constitution by launching an unprovoked attack against Libya that killed thousands of children without the approval of Congress?

33. No it doesn't
Polling numbers have little to do with getting the VP nod, particularly at this stage. In July 2003, John Edwards was getting 4 percent and Joe Leiberman 25 percent and John Kerry 14 percent. Kerry ended up getting the nomination, Edwards the VP slot and Leiberman was, for all intents and purposes, on his way out the door as an influential member of the Democratic party.

In 2007, at a comparable point in time, Giuliani was leading the repub field in the polls with 31 percent, followed by McCain and Thompson each with 18 percent. Palin didn't even register a blip. In fact, she never registered on the repub primary polls. But she got the vp nomination.

I don't know who it will be. I do know it won't be Bachmann.

45. Actually, it does
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 12:18 AM by Azathoth
The polling for Bachmann highlights the deep divide between the GOP establishment and the ultra-nuts social conservatives they depend on for votes. Bachmann is surging in the polls because those people absolutely despise Romney and Pawlenty. If Romney gets on the ballot, it will be essential, just as it was for McCain in 2008, for him to pick a running mate that will drive turnout among the ultra-conservatives, and Bachmann is very astutely positioning herself for that role. These numbers demonstrate that she is successfully filling the Palin gap, making her the de facto choice. After all, if you have to pick an insane running mate in order to appease your base, you might as well pick someone who has already proved that she can make it through a debate and a campaign (which was McCain's mistake).

46. I guess we'll have to wait and see
But I think its far more likely that the repubs try to appease their base by picking as their VP candidate someone with fundie cred who is less polarizing (and less crazy) than Bachmann.

37. It is very early
But she is a solid enough religious conservative Christian type and teabagger to do very well and perhaps win in Iowa and S. Carolina. If she takes consecutive early primaries her campaign could gain the momentum needed to make this either a short contest or a long battle to the nomination for the likes of Romney. In the current dynamic, it is possible that she could take it. The dynamic could well change before the votes are cast. Only time will tell. I hope for a long drawn out battle where the repugs spend tons of money picking the next loser.

40. Don't get excited.
People seem to be happy about the possible nomination of candidates like Palin or Bachmann, but you should be worried. If they were nominated, and I don't see it happening but still, the right has stolen elections before and could do it again. We all better hope that they nominate the least moronic person in the race, because with their history of election fraud you don't know what will happen in the end.

49. She should be
giving lap dances at redneck truck stops, but in these times that's a qualification for a Republican presidential candidate. Remember, Bush's strongest asset was fund raising, and Bachmann does that better than anyone in the House. The Citizens United Not Timid decision could be the deciding factor that brings the United States into the Third World.
Most Americans better get used to just scraping by. The Roman Empire gave us the blueprint for failure. Of course Bachmann thinks The Roman Empire is a gay S&M club.
