A boy stands by a poster showing President Barack Obama and former President John F. Kennedy, a day before Obama's visit to Puerto Rico, on the grounds of El Morro National Park in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Monday June 13, 2011. Obama's June 14 trip marks the first visit to the U.S. Territory by a sitting U.S. President since Kennedy's 1961 visit. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa)

7. They're A Swing Vote in Florida

Stateside Puerto Ricans have been receiving attention recently in the media as a potential swing vote, especially in Florida, promoting greater interest in this community. While Puerto Rican-Americans have a long history of fighting against prejudice and ignorance in the United States, there is a longstanding concern that the people of Puerto Rico are not as informed as they should be about the history and challenges faced by their compatriotas who have entered the United States since the mid-19th century.<6>

4. Really?!?
It took 50 years to get a sitting U.S. president to Puerto Rico. I'm not sure why I find that startling, but I do.

9. Puerto Rico's status is hardly that of a "foreign country". They have representation in Congress.

11. Really?

Since when have we given foreigners representation in Congress.

They don't even speak the official language of the US.
