Huntsman Courts Bushies

Former President George H.W. Bush will have lunch with Jon Huntsman on Monday in Kennebunkport, Maine. With Mitch Daniels not running for president, the Bush political circle -- political and policy advisers, campaign funders and two former presidents -- still does not have a candidate for the 2012 presidential race.

Mark Halperin: "Huntsman might end up being the consensus BushWorld candidate. Within the Republican Party, that remains the largest source of nomination throw-weight out there. Huntsman is playing an aggressive inside game, mirroring his long weekend in New England with many public events. 2. This story points up an important truth

The establishment Republicons, the country-clubber wing, is looking for it's own candidate. Mitt the Flip-Flopper, who brought RomneyCare to Massachusetts, is not someone they can really wrap their arms around, at least not as long as he's not holding the nomination in his hands. Gingrich is old news, and his performance vis-a-vis Paul Ryan is an early stumble out of the starting blocks, probably a sign of what's going to happen all the way to Iowa.

They certainly don't like the fundie candidates, and that leaves Pawlenty as their man. Huntsman is trying to head this off, but more fundies will vote for Pawlenty than they will for Huntsman in the general election. Jon Huntsman is on a futile quest to convince the tax-break crowd that the fundies (who they really don't completely understand) don't always work that way.

Once Pawlenty is out of the way, it's popcorn time.
