Obama polls well despite jobs fears
By: Andy Barr
May 15, 2011 10:52 PM EDT

Despite widespread disapproval of Barack Obama’s handling of the economy, more than half of Americans approve of the president and are open to reelecting him.

The economy and government spending stand as the dominant issues on the minds of the 1,000 registered voters surveyed nationwide for the latest POLITICO-George Washington University Battleground Poll, with 48 percent identifying either “the economy and jobs” or “government spending and the budget deficit” as the top issues.

The poll was conducted by Democratic firm Lake Research Partners and the Tarrance Group, a Republican polling firm.

Republicans looking toward 2012 have consistently argued that the president’s reelection hinges on the economy — regardless of who emerges from the GOP field. That thesis is backed by the 15 percentage-point spread — 42 percent to 57 percent — between those polled who approve and disapprove of Obama’s handling of the economy.

But the president seems — at least for now — surprisingly immune to economic fears, the poll shows. Fifty-two percent of those surveyed approve of Obama’s handling of his job, up 7 percentage points from the most recent Battleground Poll, conducted in October. Additionally, 72 percent approve of Obama personally, up 7 percentage points since October.

The president’s strong approval ratings are buttressed by the 59 percent who said they will either “definitely” vote for the president or “consider” reelecting him. Thirty-eight percent “definitely will not” vote for the president’s reelection — giving Obama a higher ceiling of support than his Republican rivals would hope to see.

2. Great news. He really is setting himself up well for reelection.
He is clearly the adult in the room.

This caps off my great week. Saw President Obama during my trip to Disney World at the Hall of Presidents...at least his animatronic figure. Was inspiring and awesome and people were clapping for him at the end when "he" gave a speech.

3. The President's position is not unassailable...
...at least it wouldn't be if not for the pack of losers the R.s have for candidates.

4. Good polling numbers
The 59% number who will at least consider re electing him is a valuable stat. I suspect these are the Liberals who don't approve of his job performance, but will vote for him anyway. There are a lot of Democrats that haven't been thrilled with Obama, but will give him 4 more years to make more Progressive policy.

Republicans are jumping ship right now, they know it has the potential to be a throw away election year for them. Thing is that if they don't run the strongest candidate possible, not only will they lose the Presidential Election, they will also lose serious numbers in Congress. Mitt Romney is the candidate, I think he's always been the front runner and will have a tough time winning the general election.

5. These are great poll numbers going into an election cycle. Now we have to hold them!!
It doesn't look like the Repubs have it together in terms of running a viable candidate. The only problem is that most repubs vote in lock step.

6. K&R. The Repubs. are still trying to paint Obama as weak on foreign policy and anti-American. Good

7. If the GOP nominates one of the current kooks
and the economy continues in the current direction, Obama will win a second term.

If things don't get worse, he should win.

9. The likability is very heart warming
It shows the more the GOP will attack his personality the more it will play against them.
