Grumpy Republicans await Obama in visit to Texas

By Maria Recio
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama may be visiting Texas on Tuesday, with stops in El Paso and a fundraiser in Austin, but he won't be feeling the love — at least not from a growing chorus of unhappy GOP lawmakers who see the administration's refusal to designate the wildfire-battered state a disaster area the latest slap in the face to the very Republican Lone Star State.

snip//

The administration has hotly denied shortchanging Texas on disaster assistance, saying the state has received 25 federal fire assistance grants for the wildfires.

snip//

But Cal Jillson, a professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, said the reaction to the seemingly backhanded treatment was strictly partisan.

"Even in Texas, the Democrats are still receptive to (Obama's) message," said Jillson. "The Republicans in Texas don't like the president, have never liked the president, so what they say is of little consequence."

The administration's response to the wildfires, he said, based on Perry's request for firefighter assistance and not individual assistance, was correct.

"Perry's been bashing Washington for years and he expects his calls to be cheerfully received?" said Jillson. "The big problem Perry has now is that Washington has caller ID."

22. This Proud Texan agrees with you
We Texas Democrats hate our Governor Goodhair. He makes a show of turning down Federal stimulus money and floats the secession balloon, but when disaster strikes, he comes running to the Federal Government, hat in hand, begging for money.

He is such a douche. The same goes for my congresscritter Michael McCaul.

23. I''ll match....
McCaul with Carter as worst repub in the state. No matter what is said they have no ear for anyone's concerns but their Tea Party base and roll over our rights. Would love to have their mama's make them play nice but maybe their mama's are why they are the way they are.
Oh yeah and Goodhair wears a ton of makeup to look so craggy. I saw him after the Houston marathon a few years ago and he is one haggard old man.

2. K&R
It amazes me --

They HAVE received assistance and are claiming they aren't getting help? This AFTER the Gov wanted to succeed? Goodness, I feel bad for the good people of Texas.

10. Absolutely Not!
A check is what the Prick wants. He needs it to balance the budget again, not for wildfire damage. He knows damn well what he's doing: he requested money for fighting the fires, which he's received. He's fabricated a lie, not only to stir the fires of his idiot base's hatred of the President, but to plant doubt in the minds of anyone else who was considering supporting President Obama.

4. Let the S.O.B.s grump.
They're going to complain no matter what Obama does. If he walked on water, they'd say it's because he can't swim. And Ricky wants foreign aid before he's even seceded.

Sorry, we'd like to help you but it means we'd have to borrow money to help you and we know how you hate that, so we're just going to spare you that agony. Maybe you can go ask China for help....YOURSELF!

9. "Washington has caller-ID" brought a good chuckle.
Perry is supposed to be making Texas self-sufficient so the state can secede, or did I misread that?

Make up your mind, Perry.

12. I always get a kick out of these States
And its usually southern states. Who are always screaming for the Feds to stay out of their state and business. That is until they need them. Or want some federal aid. I thought Gov Perry and the State of Texas wanted to break from the United States? Now the same people are bitching and whining about not getting a space shuttle or fire assistance.

20. Obama should thank perry.
Gov. goodhair has given Obama a perfect case to slap down all crazy right wing slobber mouths.

perry's request was vague. Purposefully so. He wanted all but two the state's 254 counties placed under federal assistance. That would make his buddies eligible to bilk the government for millions in low cost loans and local boondoggles. The federal government gave Texas multiple sources of aid to fight the fires. Meanwhile the republicans in Texas were passing legislation that cut fire fighting resources by 40%. Hardly indicates that they thought it was a need. And comparing the hundreds of deaths and thousands of homes destroyed in Alabama to the dozens of mostly vacation homes destroyed in Texas is ridiculous. The fires were dreadful and the drought continues to be a source of concern, but that doesn't warrant putting wet coastal towns on the disaster list.

This is a perfect place for Obama to publicly smack down little idiots in training like perry. Doing so will serve as a message to others like him who want to shine up their image among local idiots at the president's expense. It would tell them that the president will bite back, that they had better think twice before talking smack. I think another press conference like the birth certificate one is in order. An exasperated president chastises the stupid press for playing games while the country has real problems to be dealt with. State explicitly that little poops like perry are out for their own aggrandizement and the lining of their buddies pockets and that they are working against the needs of the people.

Do this or just get used to the media giving a free ride to these nuts.

24. Maybe Texas Should Change Their Laws
about throwing ciggy butts out car windows, since this is the reason for most wild fires in TX.

In CO it's jail time - Texas, not a big deal.
