Obama on bin Laden: The full "60 Minutes" interview

On Wednesday, May 4, 2011 - three days after he announced that American troops had killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan - President Barack Obama talked with "60 Minutes" correspondent Steve Kroft in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. Below is a transcript of that interview. The video of this interview is also available on this Web site.


STEVE KROFT: Mr. President, was this the most satisfying week of your Presidency?


PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Well, it was certainly one of the most satisfying weeks not only for my Presidency, but I think for the United States since I've been President. Obviously bin Laden had been not only a symbol of terrorism, but a mass murderer who's had eluded justice for so long, and so many families who have been affected I think had given up hope.


And for us to be able to definitively say, "We got the man who caused thousands of deaths here in the United States and who had been the rallying point for a violent extremist jihad around the world" was something that I think all of us were profoundly grateful to be a part of.

1. Saw it. Exulted in that Obama is our Pres.

So incisive. So thoughtful. So intelligent. So aware of all the risks and all the attendant history. So aware of EVERYTHING and so confident in his team and the people (and dog, though not mentioned) conducting the mission. So concerned that whatever happened, the team return safely. He is awesome and deliberate at the same time.

I am frustrated with him often, but this is the guy I worked for and voted for and yes, gave a few $ for. I will do it again, despite my disappointment on some issues (education, seeming to cave in to Rethugs on taxes etc.)

He is a pragmatic realist, who is not afraid to take a risk, when it is the interest of our national psyche.

Even though I HATE GWB with every fiber of my being, I further damn him forever for not taking up the invite to Ground Zero to visually unite the nation, and perhaps help heal it just a bit more.

Obama is an Adult and his team is several measures more competent than the one Bush assembled. Bush would have bungled everything especially the aftermath.
