25. Hey...I'm thrilled Obama invited him....
He showed a lot of class and self-confidence. But I'm even more thrilled that Bush declined.

8. Good question. I'm sure we will hear. I also wonder if GHW Bush was invited or Carter? In other
words, any and all (live) past presidents.

I see it as a very respectful move. He's allowing Pres. Obama his moment.

10. Precisely.
I was about to post the same thing. This worked out exactly as it should have. Obama invited. Bush respectfully declined.

Or somewhere in GWB is a spark of realization that he doesn't deserve to share the spotlight.

As much as I hate Bush, I have to admit he has been very gracious towards Obama. I think this is another instance of that.

22. I initially figured that
but another poster pointed out that there was a possibility of being booed. Bush isn't exactly a popular figure in NYC.

Say whatever you want about GWB, but he was very gracious during the transition and he hasn't criticized Obama at all.

26. Me, too!
I'm not anything close to a GWB fan, but at times he is capable of great grace. He has been very gracious toward President Obama and this is a classy move on his part.

Everyone comes out looking very good in this situation. It was important for the President to invite him and it was nice for him to decline.

32. I'm no fan of George Bush, but
We don't know that he is drinking. Because we don't know that, let's lay off that. Getting sober and staying sober is very difficult. I'm even willing to give him a break on alcoholism.

19. Could it be what I'm sure he now regrets?
He allowed the CIA to shut down a unit focused on the capture of Bin Laden for a decade because officials had decided Bin laden “wasn’t the threat he originally was”? Bush said twice that he was no longer worried about Bin Laden and it's all on tape.

21. Considering it is NYC
and the way the GOP has behaved towards 9/11 first responders, firefighters, and everyone else in the city...Oh not to mention the EPA withholding information regarding the air quality in battery park...I could go on.

I gotta say, it was rather a smart move by Bush. It may have been very embarrassing.

28. I think Bush's reasons for declining are twofold
He thinks he might be booed, and
Obama nabbed bin Laden in 2.5 years, something Bush could not do in 8, and Bush does NOT want that comparison highlighted.

30. Obama should thank Bush
He should thank him because he learned from Bush's mistakes at Tora Bora. Bush and Rumsfeld were presented with the exact same choice Obama was. Either take action or let the Pakistanis handle it. Bush chose wrong and Obama learned from that and made the correct choise.
