Who the hell did Gallup poll: Americans Divided Over Ryan vs. Obama Deficit Plans
Americans Divided Over Ryan vs. Obama Deficit Plans

The Republican plan protects the rich and cuts too much from Medicare, Social Security and other social programs, but Americans love it?

A majority of Americans are worried that Democrats will use this as an "excuse to raise taxes" and "cut defense spending too much"?

WTF?

Wonder how these respondents would rate the People's Budget?

1. Easy....polling outfits call certain zip codes at certain times of the day.....
and then pretend like their results are a "reflection"
of all of America.....so as to influence public opinion.

It is what they are paid to do, and they do it well.

4. No, the poll is likely accurate...
Blaming the polls isn't going to help.

The US is a pretty evenly divided country and people have mixed (and often contradictory) views on how to deal with the budget going forward. They often oppose tax hikes AND spending cuts in the same poll - but at the same time say we need to tackle the deficit. The truth is, most people on both the right and left have little idea how the government actually works. Yes, we here on DU understand what the competing plans are and what is at stake, but most people don't really have any idea - they form their opinions based on generalities and stereotypes of the party's.

The Republicans keep moving the goalposts to the right, and in doing so as a major party they are able to tug large numbers of people along with them.

5. Not sure if Gallup has fixed this...
...but, Josh Marshall (TPM) covered the polling deficit last year. Most polling orgs. still use "land lines" only and not cell phones. The majority of land line users are seniors. Some polling orgs. have updated their system, but not all.

One big reason why I stopped paying attention to polls. Not worth the stress or frustration.

NOTE: I believe it was also covered by Kos.

3. LOL - after YOU have used Gallup so many times to 'prove' that
Obama is strongest with 'liberal Democrats' - as opposed to his REAL base, DLC blue dogs.

8. LOL
So you like this poll?

Polls vary. Some people like them when they show Obama's approval rating dropping or unemployment climbing.

Some polls are suspicious, and I'd say this qualifies: "cut defense spending too much."

What do you think?

9. No, I'm saying this poll is no more, and no less, trustworthy than
those you constantly praise.

Gallup has been a partisan outfit for 15 years. And NOT partisan toward progressives.

you're attempting to discredit Obama's approval among liberals using this poll.

"Gallup has been a partisan outfit for 15 years. And NOT partisan toward progressives."

So if its partisan, how do you think the polls of his approval ratings are skewed?

What about other polling organizations that produce similar results?

13. People don't know the details yet
So this was effectively more of a "who do you like more, Republicans or Democrats?" poll.

14. I wonder what the order of the questions actually was
Many of the polled "reasons" sound almost like they are attempting to push ideas that might not otherwise be there - especially the idea that Democrats have an agenda to "raise taxes". (rather than the more likely cause and effect - the deficit is too high to continue, it can't be completely dealt with by cutting spending without harming people too much.)

16. Gallup has been pushing some
very leading questions related to this issue.

Democrats, Republicans Differ Widely on Taxing the Rich

PRINCETON, NJ -- President Obama's call Wednesday for higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans highlights a partisan and class gulf in Americans' views on taxing the rich. Substantial majorities of Democrats and of those with low incomes endorse the idea of redistributing wealth by heavy taxes on the rich. Two-thirds or more of Republicans and of those with higher incomes disagree.

<...>

Who knew President Obama called for "redistributing wealth by heavy taxes on the rich"?

Also, when did ending the Bush tax cuts become redistributing wealth and heavy taxes on the rich?

17. Details
66 percent worried "cuts Medicare too much"

65 percent worried "cuts Medicare too much"

64 percent worried "take away needed protections for the poor and disadvantaged"

64 percent worried it "protects the rich at the expense of everyone else"

Overall: 43 percent Republican/Ryan plan preferred

For those numbers to make sense, some of those worried about the cuts to social programs would have to see these concerns as no big deal. Given the reaction at the GOP town halls, that's a stretch.
