The President shouldn't travel to Brazil during a crisis . . .
Edited on Sat Mar-19-11 11:25 PM by EffieBlack
OK . . .

Does that mean he shouldn't travel to ANY foreign country during a crisis?

What if (in Goldie Hawn's best Sunny from Protocol voice) the country is, like attached . . . Could he go to Mexico or Canada?

Can he go kind of far away as long as he stays within U.S. borders? For example, can he go to California or Florida? What if one of those places is farther away than Mexico or Canada? Can he still go?

Or if he shouldn't go anywhere that far away, how close does he have to stay to Washington?

Can he go to Baltimore, about 40 miles away? What about Alexandria, Virginia, just over the river from DC?

Or is he supposed to stay IN DC?

If so, can he go up the edge of the city? Can he go to Joe Biden's house at the Naval Observatory, which is still in Washington but kind of far away?

Or does he have to stay like within a mile of the White House?

Or maybe he should never set foot outside of the White House grounds. If so, can he walk around in the Rose Garden or does he have to stay in the building at all times? Can he go upstairs to the family quarters or should he just stay in the Oval Office until the crisis is over?

And what if he has several crises in a row - you know, like a financial meltdown and then really high unemployment and then an oil spill and then an uprising in Egypt and then an earthquake in Japan. Does he have to stay in the Oval Office until there's absolutely no crisis at all happening anywhere in the world that could affect the U.S.?

Just wondering . . .

1. If he stayed in DC because of a "crisis", he'd never leave. There's always a "crisis"
somewhere in the world. To think the most powerful man in the world can't be plugged in, away from the office, is just asinine. Great post, btw.

8. As Gilda said, 'it's always something'.
Spot on Tarheel

Is there a day that there is some 'crisis' to some degree or another?

11. Which gives the complainers another thing to complain about.
Which is why I've stopped listening to them. They may occasionally have a good point, but are like the little boy who cried wolf. After a while, nobody hears them.

2. Your defensive rhetorical post says it all.

Of course he should have canceled that stupid trip. It was some kind of horrible political miscalculation, a world class blunder on the part of Pfluff or some other god damn handler/s

Who cares that the trip has been in the works for months, would take months to reschedule, and serves an important U.S. interest. What's more important than anything is that the President paralyzes and isolates himself in the Oval Office because the only important thing happening in the world is occurring in Libya and it would send the wrong message to somebody if he appears to be thinking, talking or doing something about anything other than that.

5. Who cares about any of that? It simply wasn't important. It was
a half ass trade mission. He's taken leave of his senses.

6. I think the President has perfect control over his senses
Those who are hysterically whining about the President actually doing his job . . . I'm not so sure about.

15. Is there a precedent for this?
Did LBJ or some other heroic President cancel a diplomatic trip due to some crisis in some other part of the world?

14. How far away from his desk can he go?
Should he be chained to it and fed leftovers from the kitchen once a day? And if he escapes, should we release the dogs to hunt him down?

Effie, thank you. This theme has been running around in my head for the last few days and I'm so happy you gave me the opportunity to voice what I feel and fear.

17. He has to stay right at his desk until it's time to fly to Wisconsin to stand with the unions ...
Funny that, on the one hand, he's supposed to run around the country participating in protests related to whatever issue has captured public attention in a given week, but God forbid the President of the United States go to a foreign country during his term ...
