'Read my lips,' says Boehner in spending showdown with Obama
'Read my lips,' says Boehner in spending showdown with Obama
By Russell Berman - 02/17/11 01:40 PM ET

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday ruled out a short-term government-funding bill that maintains “current levels” of federal spending, escalating a showdown with Democrats and President Obama.

The House is now considering a continuing resolution to fund the government for the rest of fiscal 2011, but Obama has vowed to veto it because of its deep spending cuts.

Senior lawmakers have begun discussions on a short-term stopgap measure to prevent a government shutdown after March 4, when funding runs out, but Boehner said that bill would also have to contain spending cuts.

“I am not going to move any kind of short-term CR at current levels,” the Speaker told reporters at his weekly press conference. “When we say we’re going to cut spending, read my lips, we’re going to cut spending.”

George H.W. Bush famously said "read my lips" when promising during his successful 1988 presidential campaign not to raise taxes. But the phrase came back to haunt him when, as president, he raised taxes.

Boehner Falsely Claims ‘There’s Been No Talk Of Shutting The Government Down On Our Side’

<...>

BOEHNER: The only people cheering for government shutdown around here are Democrats, led by Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer. There’s been no talk about shutting the government down on our side. Our goal here is to reduce spending. It isn’t to shutdown the government.

9. Ooh. A showdown. Let's see how that goes.
If I remember correctly, there are provisions within the Patriot Act and other Republican-engineered legislation from around six years ago that allows the President, in times of crisis, to assume frightening powers. Enormous, near-dictatorial powers.

And a shutdown of the government in the middle of two wars and a financial meltdown is one hell of a big f#$%ing crisis.

BOO!

Now do you really want to have a showdown, pussies?
