I don't believe for the slightest moment that you "got this."

I am not going to chill the fuck out.

3. It's mostly used now to scold those who disagree with something Obama is doing
or complain about something he's not doing.

it's also suggesting that there's 5 level chess going on so everyone should shut up and let him play the game himself and we'll all be fine.

but sometimes his definition of winning is different than ours.

69. It's multi-purpose, actually.
If you look at some of the posts below, in can be used as an excuse to sneak in some condescending insults of those who might not think it's such a horrifying disgrace.

Kinda like the Bible - people use it to suit their own purposes.

131. In fairness to the OP, Obama himself encourages his supporters to push him to the left
So I don't think his attitude is at all, everybody sit down shut up and let me deal with this. He definitely wants his supporters to actively participate in government.

I think the graphic was pretty hilarious when there were dozens of "concerned" people on DU and elsewhere during the '08 elections, particularly after Palin was first introduced. I'm sure it will make some good appearances in the 2012 campaign too. But I don't think it's applicable for Obama's governing.

What helps Republicans and the Corporate Shills more - seeing Democrats push Obama toward a more populist, progressive agenda, or knowing that some Obama supporters will defend him no matter how much he moves to the right or toward the influence of Big Business?

Holy crap! Is this what you think you're doing? Well if that's the case, I'll have to go with option #1. If you think constant, relentless attacks from the left isn't helping pukes and corps who would love to see Obama go, then I really feel sorry for you.

maybe not with this thread, and then again maybe so, at the granular level.

Involvement is messy. But if you think that what I did is "constant, relentless attacks from the left" then save your sorry feelings for Obama. He's the one that urged us to hold him to the fire, poor guy.

178. I believe that jump starting a conversation
over whether Obama's policies are left or right, or corporate or populist, helps, even if only a little-even if you have to use unusual methods to "jump the start." Maybe it doesn't help you, and maybe it doesn't help Obama push his agenda, but if I disagree with that agenda, that wouldn't concern me, would it?

Why should we NOT have a conversation on the issues? What is it that you fear about ideas?

and that much time away from work would turn into unemployment, and goodbye to the meager income that comes with it. And I will be at the Awake the State march in Florida, where I live, on March 8th.

Still, if I knew that my presense would make the difference for Wisconsin, you're damn right I would go.

Now tell me what any of that has to do with whether Obama should go?

163. Washington Post: "Obama joins Wisconsin's budget battle, opposing Republican anti-union bill"
Edited on Fri Feb-18-11 09:38 AM by ClarkUSA
MADISON, WIS. – President Obama thrust himself and his political operation this week into Wisconsin’s broiling budget battle, mobilizing opposition Thursday to a Republican bill that would curb public-worker benefits while planning similar action in other state capitals.

Obama accused Scott Walker, the state’s new Republican governor, of unleashing an “assault” on unions in pushing emergency legislation that would nullify collective-bargaining agreements that affect most public employees, including teachers.

The president’s political machine worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x614107

Your demands are irrevelent as the President made it clear as to where he stands on this issue. As for making a difference, I'm surprised you aren't making every effort to get to Madison, given the President has done his part already and will continue to do so, via news headlines and his OFA/DNC organizing.

Registering resentment of the President from the comfort of a keyboard is a piece of cake. It's much harder to govern an entire nation wisely and well, given very tough opposition from teabagger state governors and the Teabagger Congress.

Just because you can't give him any credit and are demanding he stop off in WI on his way to CA to satisfy your keyboard goalposts doesn't mean that most Americans agree with you. In fact, those who can pick up a paper or read news online can see whose side the President is on.

But do keep on resenting an internet photo. That's so much more important.

155. None of us have a sporty blue and white airplane that makes for a wonderful
backdrop, or the money to pay for a professional speech writer that can give us sweet and poetic words.

Let us also not forget that none of us on this board have a sweet and glorious title like "President of the United States", or the ability to ask the networks for air time and to give up revenue they would otherwise make from commercials to address such a critical issue.

But you're right. As leader of the Democratic party, President Obama has no obligation to show up among the working class people and tell them that he supports their efforts and will do all he and his office can to help make sure that unions have a voice in this country.

You're right. Why should he do this for a union when he's busy scheduling his next speech to the Chamber of Commerce.

If Pres. Obama doesn't go, despite giving interviews telling it like it is and giving the green light to OFA and the DNC to support the unions, it's because he doesn't care enough.

If you and others don't go to WI, yet demand that he goes, despite your alleged "limited incomes and resources" and despite everything he is doing (see Reply #163), that's okay.

The DNC is helping only because Pres. Obama gave them the go-ahead. Glad you think it's wonderful that President Obama is helping, even if you can't actually give him credit directly. I am more than happy to fill in the gaps.

"President Obama's proposed budget cuts to the (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) LIHEAP may be a big blow to the millions of households who depend on it for heating assistance this winter.

Reuters - Under Obama's proposal, the program's funding will be cut from a little over $5 billion to just $2.5 billion.

Predictably, critics (mostly Democrat politicians) lashed out at what they believe is a cruel and unfair squeeze on the poor, especially in light of the cold weather this year and the persistent economic difficulties of the lower class in the post-Great Recession period.

Below are some of the reactions:

-"In the middle of a brutal, even historic, New England winter, home heating assistance is more critical than ever to the health and welfare of millions of Americans, especially senior citizens," said Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Source: kerry.senate.gov

-"Families’ heating bills have been piling up, as well, and so have the record number of people who are turning to LIHEAP to help them get through the winter,” said Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

"Cutting off funds for this program now means that millions of families could have their heating cut off. These families would be forced to decide once again between heating and eating," said Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

"LIHEAP is important and critical to many low-income constituents of mine, and all over Texas, who face extreme summer temperatures and cold temperatures. I welcome you to come to Houston any time between May 1 and the end of September and see why we need cooling assistance," said Representative Gene Green of Texas.

Source: www.ect.coop

"I don’t think we should balance the budget on the backs of seniors who cannot afford the rising costs of heating their home," said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

"Heat in the winter is not a ‘consumer choice.’ It is not a household budget option. Heat in the winter in Vermont is a basic necessity," said Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

"This is definitely not the time to make it harder for low-income families to heat their homes," said Representatives Chellie Pingree of Maine.

The "bully pulpit" is dead.

Sure, if all people had was a radio, with one station, or heck, a TV that only got THREE station, yes, the President can control the message.

Its no longer true.

There is no way that Obama can get the people of ALABAMA to believe anything he says. Most Republicans think he's probably not even an American. What, you think he can "bully pulpit" them out of that belief???

Dream on.

If Obama spoke for an hour EVERY DAY ... Fox would still use the other 23 to bash him. AND, the other media outlets would cut away from his speech so we could see what Sarah Palin said on facebook.

You complained about a photo.

I think I am correct about the "bully pulpit" ... its been dead for a while. And anyone declaring that the President should have been able to tell people who clearly HATE HIM to change their minds is, well, at least semi-delusional.

Now ... to your point. Yes, I do think this is a Left vs Right discussion, because the BASE of the right wing is not only willing to have cuts for public workers, they DEMAND them. And the people they elect are clearly nuts.

And ... the reason the "powerless" are powerless is because THEY DON'T VOTE, or they decide that GOD, GUNS, and "COUNTRY" is more than a slogan ... and so they vote for the GOP.

The Dems did not help pass Citizens United. Very few Dems voted for Graham-Leech-Biliey.

The BIG part is LEFT vs RIGHT ... the sub channel is "have, have not".

All Obama had to do was ask for a million people to march on Washington DC in support of Medicare for All, and it would have happened.

Maybe the people of Alabama would listen to him if he would pardon their Governor Don Siegleman who was railroaded into prison by Karl Rove, instead of pardoning Republican Ted "Bridge to Nowhere" Stevens.

Bubba and other recent Dem presidents didn't deal with a second Great Depression, either, although former DLC chairman Bill Clinton helped paved the way for it by scrapping Glass-Steagall, to the everlasting delight of Republicans.

President Obama sure got the auto industry's back and saved it from certain death. And his DNC has got the Wisconsin protesters back now. As a longtime liberal, I've been very pleased with all the things he has done on my behalf.

Gitmo is still open because Congressional Republicans refuse to fund its closing.

President Obama ended torture in his first month of office.

Pres. Obama ended the Iraq war as promised and will end the Afghanistan war as promised, too (unless you have a crystal ball that tells you differently).

Congressional Republicans held the middle-class tax cuts hostage and forced Democrats to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy until 2012, against Pres. Obama's wishes.

There weren't enough votes in the Senate for the public option, thanks to Joe Lieberman.

Complaining about the possibility of LIHEAP being cut now? What did you do to make sure Democrats kept their "Super Majority in Congress" in 2010?

I was surprised that there was not a thread this week entitled "Obama is in the pocket of BIG CANDY" ... the text of which would go on to explain how he'd bought Michelle some Valentine's chocolate from the wrong candy company.

Outrage, outrage, outrage!!!!!

114. Oh no I didn't - I posted this OP in the first place
because I don't think the photo's message is accurate, in fact, I believe it perpetuates a myth, and falsely portrays Obama as being more fiery in temperament, and more in control of the overall situation in which this country finds itself, than he actually is.

I'm pretty sure I have the right to voice my opinion about our elected officials, even if (perhaps especially if) those opinions are critical. Dissent is not treason. I'm not breaking any DU rules - I don't want to see Obama defeated by a Republican, and I'm not insulting anyone. I wouldn't even care if Obama were to be re-elected. If, and only if, here were to act more like a Democrat.

I appreciate that 82% of Democrats approve of him. But I venture to say that some portion of that number is probably made up of people who would approve of ANY Democrat. Unfortunately, some other percent is probably made up of people who buy into the iconic Obama myth. They don't understand that we really don't have HCR, we really don't have job programs, and that Obama's actions have more then occasionally benefited corporate interests over personal liberties.

I could be wrong, and I accept that I may hold a minority opinion. Fine. That's one of the reasons that I love living in a democracy based on a bill of civil rights - rights that protect the minority from the majority. At some point in our country's history, the majority of people thought it was pretty cool that slaves and women were not allowed to vote. The majority is not always right, and being in the majority (in and of itself) is not an indication of being right.

I posted the OP knowing it would ruffle some feathers, and that I would probably get my feathers ruffled as well, but thats OK too. If your feathers can't take ruffling you may want a different hobby than posting and reading in a political forum full of people with strongly held beliefs.

But I honestly didn't expect some of the responses that this thread generated. Don't get me wrong - there were no threats of violence or any of that nonsense, just a depth of snarkiness that caught me off guard. It is what it is.

115. You need to refresh your memory as to why & how the photo first came about in Sept. 2008.

Start here: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=everyone+chill+the+f+out+i+got+this&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Handwringers who presumed to know better than Team Obama on how to win the general election was the original target of this photo's message. The message that some Democrats should stop wringing their hands and acting like Chicken Littles every time a Republican says, "BOO!" is a welcome one and leaves most liberals like me approving of Pres. Obama's approach to his base (a very large majority - 82% by a recent poll's reckoning - have always supported him, after all).

Of course, there are those 11% (half of which think he's too liberal) who'll always find fault.

Any other read into this photo is simply a reflection of personal bias against President Obama and his supporters by the same people who never liked him or his supporters much in the first place.

117. There's SO much wrong with what you wrote
1. I used to be on that "Team Obama." I always believed Obama could win, and would win. After winning the Primary and the GE, and after a time seeing the man in action, I came to believe that winning for the sake of winning wasn't enough. You had to use the power of the office you had won in such a way as to bring change - change you promised, and change we needed.

2. I know WHY the pic was developed, what I don't like is HOW it developed, and what it represents NOW. It is no longer directed at Republicans. It is directed at Democrats.

3. Majority opinion =/= Correct Opinion. After all, the majority of Americans watch Fox News.

4. It is wrong to categorize people who find a fault as people who are Fault Finders.

5. Saying "Any other read" about ANYTHING is RASH generalization, and in this case, 100% wrong. I started out a FERVENT Obama supporter. I have no personal bias. I would probably find the man charming and fun if I were ever fortunate enough to find myself in the company of the POTUS. The bias is YOURS, and is demonstrated in the demonization and casual dismissal of ideas with which you disagree.

1. Uh huh.

2. Wrong. The picture was never directed at Republicans, as you claim. It was ALWAYS directed at Chicken Little Democrats and it still is... which is why those of us who really do understand its message appreciate it still.

3. Apples and oranges. The majority of Democrats neither watch Faux News or disapprove of President Obama. Let's stick to facts, shall we?

4. If the shoe fits...

5. See 1.

You've successfully made the point that the picture was meant to ridicule other Dems.

Back to my point, given Obama's poor record on fighting for populist, progressive issues, it's time to call out this picture for what it is - shallow propaganda meant to ridicule and intimidate.

Obama doesn't "got this" and those who see that for what it is should not "chill the fuck out."

220. Yes, I have again illustrated how the photo was meant as an apropos message to certain people.
Edited on Fri Feb-18-11 09:21 PM by ClarkUSA
The message of the photo was always meant to signal to the 24/7 handwringers in the Democratic Party to let Team Obama do what they have proven time and again they do better than any of their critics: succeed in beating the political odds under the toughest of conditions. It's laughable how so many of Pres. Obama's critics have little to no legislative or political experience yet they continue to second-guess and demonize President Obama's motives at every turn.

Speaking of which, read up on the simple common sense rationale behind the LIHEAP cuts here (if you're interested in the facts, that is):

How can you see my comment that I knew I would "ruffle a few feathers" as being, in any way, a contradiction of my surprise that "so many people would be so angry" ?

In fact, the one thought completes the second: "I posted the OP knowing it would ruffle some feathers but I had no idea that so many people would be so angry about this."

That's a perfectly reasonable progression of ideas. You are reaching...

208. Somebody's "reaching" alright. My original post stands un-refuted, as you *continue* to concede.
The "issue" is that you want to have the much-cherished "last word" while making it appear as if you have not already conceded my original point, in order, I guess, to make it appear as if you have "won" another titanic internet debate between anonymous strangers.

Here are the facts:

1. I said you knew exactly what you were doing when you posted this flame-bait OP, and you did.

2. You told me I was wrong in a follow-up reply, then proceeded to concede the point of my original post by stating that, yes, you knew it would "ruffle some feathers" - which is the textbook definition of making people "so angry".

3. Now, having conceded all of that, you are continuing to string out this sub-thread for the reasons I stated above.

4. The End.

But that's really, at the end of the day, irrelevant: you are now reduced, per your latest reply, to taking my observations above and repackaging them as your own, and then forging ahead with an attempt to apply them in reverse. It is to laugh.

The bottom line is you have conceded my point despite your repeated denials in this reply and the one previous, by your own precisely stated words, and all the rest is still a desperate clutch at that precious "last word."

Again: it is to laugh.

Look at whatever pics you like. If you think I want to ban anything, you're mistaken. I'm hoping that some people will understand that the picture doesn't apply, that people should not chill out and let Obama handle things, because he is either:

A. Unable to handle things

or

B. Unwilling to handle things

its a "will vs skill" issue.

159. I have a serious question
Do you care more about supporting Pres Obama than implementing progressive policies? Why? Are you happy with the policies that have been promulgated by the White House the past two years? Tax cuts? Wars? Not closing Gitmo? His latest budget? Assassinating Americans without a judicial order?

161. I have a serious answer: check your facts before posting baseless rhetoric

<< Are you happy with the policies that have been promulgated by the White House the past two years? Tax cuts? Wars? Not closing Gitmo? His latest budget? Assassinating Americans without a judicial order? >>

Do you care more about blaming President Obama over things he has no control over (being as there is a equal branch of government in control of creating legislation called Congress) than recognizing this POTUS has done more to advance this country's progressive policy tilt under worse circumstances (both political and economic) in his two years in office than any other Democratic president since FDR (BTW, FDR had the benefit of significantly larger Democratic majorities in Congress to work with and much friendlier/more moderate Republicans willing to cross the aisle)?

Some facts:

1. The "Tax cuts" bill you bemoan benefitted the middle class and small business owners (95% of them make less than $250K per annum). The payroll tax holiday was bemoaned by Republicans as a second stimulus plan after the fact and will give me, a non-wealthy taxpayer, enough for an mortgage payment.

2. Republicans refuse to fund the closing of Gitmo. You're 100% wrong that "Not closing Gitmo" is a policy "promulgated by the White House". There is zero proof of that and lots of official statements and press pointing to the opposite notion.

3. "His latest budget" is being diced and sliced by the Teabagger Congress, if you bother reading the news. Are you going to blame him for what Boehner's Bunch is doing? If you are, I guess you've answered my first question.

4. There has only been one American in question who is an active mass murderer mastermind (see Virginia massacre). "Kill or capture" is the order given for the US-born leader of Al-Qaida in Yemen. If the asshole doesn't stop training suicide troops like the Christmas bomber and the Times Square bomber while posting murderous rants directing his minions to kill Americans and target the US, then it's the CIC's job to do what is necessary to protect American lives.

172. I don't understand the hate for Obama.
He campaigned as a moderate President, and is now a moderate President. :)

181. Well...
It's someone that doesn't have their head up their ass, and works to get things done instead of wasting time on the fringe. Moderate = Leader.
Obama = Moderate = Leader.
Get it?

Mocking the Democratic president and his supporters, as in the OP = dandy.

Defending the Democratic president and his *progressive* accomplishments, some of which have come about in spite of the purity-based objections of a small handful of serial critics on the supposed left = insulting.

224. No, your definition doesn't describe a political inclination at all.
Moderate=leader????

So any leader is by definition moderate?

That position borders on insanity.

177. I think it's time to retire....
All the anti-Obama bullshit.

Day after day it's bitching and pissing and moaning about Obama and how he's not living up to some peoples expectations and blah blah blah. Bullshit. You name one fuckin' candidate that could be elected that would be doing a better job then President Obama. Just one. Name it. Don't bother naming Hillary either because she's more conservative then Obama.

182. First, not many thought Obama "could be elected"
Who "can" be elected is pretty fluid, so the call to "name one fuckin' candidate that could be elected that would be doing a better job then President Obama" should be shortened to the following:

"name one fuckin' candidate that could be doing a better job then President Obama?"

Right off the top of my head - Russ Feingold.

I'm sure others have their own ideas.

Edited on Fri Feb-18-11 12:48 PM by jefferson_dem
While i'm a fan of Feingold, and appreciate his occasional fits of principled independence... facts are facts.

He voted FOR the health care reform bill signed into law by Obama (the one you now criticize).

He voted against middle class tax cuts and an extension of unemployment benefits in December.

He, in a desperate effort to save his political hide, saddled up with Republicans and teabaggers to vote against financial reform.

Sorry.

his own home state wouldn't even send him back to the Senate.

Reality...

190. That's exactly why the RWNJs have opposed him at every single turn...
and why Democrats in the electorate and in Congress have remained mostly unified with the President in promoting their agenda. Right-o. :eyes:
