Obama plays Egypt just right, backing protesters over dictator Mubarak

Egyptians celebrated the resignation of president Hosni Mubarak in Tahrir Square. Festivities lasted well into the night.

WASHINGTON - Republicans struggled with a pesky intramural squabble Friday over budget cuts as President Obama celebrated the remarkable rise of democracy in Egypt.

Guess who looks better today?

After a shaky beginning, Obama and his foreign policy handlers seem to have gotten this crisis right. Hosni Mubarak and his repressive baggage are gone, but America's relationship with a critical Mideast ally and partner in the war on global terror remains intact.

Moreover, Obama has positioned himself as a soulmate for the hundreds of thousands of ordinary Egyptians who stormed the Arab country's streets in peaceful protest instead of another American leader playing ball with an aging autocrat.

Politically, Obama was showcased as dealing with an authentic world crisis instead of worrying about his intense but below-the-radar campaign for a second term.

Meanwhile, a major conservative gathering of Obama-bashers in Washington was crowded off the airwaves by the iconic images from Cairo's Tahrir Square.

"How can you complain about him over this?" a top Republican warrior moaned. "It's no contest."

3. And that is their goal and agenda...to complain.
Regardless of what Obama says or does...the republicans only have one mission...to criticize. To find fault.

6. Not those that I know...
the media presses what it likes. But the man is savvy and knows the rhetoric to get the reactions, I have to grant him that.

13. Yeah, she makes some good points but to expect President Obama to change decades of foreign policy..
in the ME in just a couple of years is naive at best.

14. Well, but for us to maintain any support from the ME people
that's just what he's going to have to do.

15. That's probably true... we will see how this plays out.
This might be the catalyst to finally make some significant things happen.

8. What is the most damaging to the rightwing is that they have been screaming...
that anti-US/anti-Israel elements will take over if Mubarak is allowed to be taken down. That clearly has not and will not happen. It makes them look like they were either simply clueless and ignorant or just attempting to use the situation to score cheap political points. Either way its a huge political win for Obama.. in addition to a tremendous win for the people of Egypt and perhaps the entire Arab world.

10. If the US continues to promote the Israeli policy on Gaza
the US will have problems with the Egyptians and the Middle East.

11. I agree with that but its certainly a tremendously complex and difficult situation.
I do hope the administration can make further headway on Palistian/Gaza issues. Its long past due.

9. Their only play is to keep hammering on the "muslim brotherhood" propaganda
that they've concocted. That will keep their base happy, but normal people (independents, non-crazy repubs, dems) will wonder what all the excitement is about as the military transitions over to an elected democracy and the Faux newz dreaded brotherhood takes 3% of parliament or something. So they have their base on this, and will for some time.

18. Actually, they have two.
The second is berating him over "back-stabbing" Mubarak, and in the process, Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah. Check out the re-run of "The McLaughlin Group" sometime today, if you can. Uncle Pat was spewing both talking points today. So were two of his three other "panel" members.
